    Almost no work on weekends.
Base pay is max student pay.
Great job to have during school.

You have to be there at 6am every weekday.
You can not get a promotion.
One Saturday per month you will have to be there from 6-9am.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They could treat their employees a little nicer. This may motivate the employees to work harder.

I worked at University of Wisconsin full-time

    Pros

They are very flexible and are pretty lenient. Other than that, they are also very kind and friendly. Very good place to work.

    Cons

Management seems like they don't want to be there. They overall look very depressed, but at same time some can micromanage.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Working in a positive environment is what makes this job the spectacular. I come to work with the motivation and desire to work everyday. The work is at your own pace which again requires motivation on your part.

    Cons

Finding parking is the biggest challenge in this job. Since it's located downtown, expect to pay around $10 for an 8 hour shift to park in the parking ramp. Besides that, there aren't many cons about this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a little more structure and update system more often. Design a map for new employees to find where they are going.

I worked at University of Wisconsin full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Intelligent workforce, which is an advantage in a university setting. Enough people who really care about doing a great job to motivate you. Shared governance ensures that you have opportunities to voice you opinions/concerns to the upper management. Job security if you are on hard money.

    Cons

Much lower than average pay as compared to other schools in the Big 10. Typical red tape and hassle due to working for the state. Enough people who have given up on plowing through the red tape to sometimes greatly fustrate you. Lack of job security if you are on soft money. University doesn't invest in training people to be good managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about how your policies and work environment (e.g., parking costs) impact the large percentage of your workforce who make less than $30K/year.

I worked at University of Wisconsin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good support system for personal, professional, academic growth. Large graduate student community, good support staff. Some professors manage groups better than others, and there appears to be support for them to gain skills to do this. OK financial support for research and graduate students. Good medical/dental benefits for grad students. People know how to blow off steam and have a good time. Work hard/play hard

    Cons

Few professors are effective lab managers, compensation is low, not a variety of benefits for grad students, takes advantage of foreign students' inability to be funded by most federal research training grants, not a lot of support for developing skills for careers outside of academia

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Professors need more help in managing labs--perhaps funds for lab management staff or additional leadership training would be good. Have fewer students per year and per lab, but increase support staff resources available to students and professors.
