I worked at University of Wisconsin part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The pay is good, especially if you're a student. Raises are given twice a year based on performance. Coworkers are interesting people, shifts leaders are usually friendly. You're conducting academic studies so you're technically collecting data which is great to put on your resume. You gain telephone communication skills, heighten attention to detail, and knowledge about survey research. This kind of survey research isn't marketing or reviews, it's all academic. Examples include, health surveys from the CDC or an asthma survey for a study conducted by UW-Madison. It's really cool to be conducting survey's for such notable clients. This company is one of the best survey centers in the US.

    Cons

You're basically a telemarketer but instead of selling stuff, you're trying to get people to take an academic survey. You make tons of phones calls and most of the time, people are rude or hang up on you. There's a lot of rejection (if you're not good with rejection, this job is definitely not for you). The work is repetitive. You make a bazillion calls a day. There is one study everyone knows and you'll be calling that study for a few months until you learn how to conduct other studies. That means you read the same questions over and over again (if someone picks up and agrees to do the survey with you). Some surveys are 5-45 mins long; some even last an hour. You have to remain objective, it's part of survey research. If you're not a student, you're an LTE. LTE's only get 20 hrs/week and get capped at a certain wage. All shifts are 4 hours with a min of 12 hours a week. You're required to work at least weekend shift. Week day hours are 9-1, 1-5, or 5-9. You can't have any other hours. This makes scheduling extremely inconvenient.

    Pros

Lets you balance course work and employment. You get to decide your schedule. The job is not very stressful and you can take the job at your own pace most of the time.

    Cons

It is hard to advance to a supervisor position. The management at the dining halls are usually to oblivious to recognize the effort that students put in.

They are very flexible and are pretty lenient. Other than that, they are also very kind and friendly. Very good place to work.

    Pros

Working in a positive environment is what makes this job the spectacular. I come to work with the motivation and desire to work everyday. The work is at your own pace which again requires motivation on your part.

    Cons

Finding parking is the biggest challenge in this job. Since it's located downtown, expect to pay around $10 for an 8 hour shift to park in the parking ramp. Besides that, there aren't many cons about this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a little more structure and update system more often. Design a map for new employees to find where they are going.

I worked at University of Wisconsin full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Intelligent workforce, which is an advantage in a university setting. Enough people who really care about doing a great job to motivate you. Shared governance ensures that you have opportunities to voice you opinions/concerns to the upper management. Job security if you are on hard money.

    Cons

Much lower than average pay as compared to other schools in the Big 10. Typical red tape and hassle due to working for the state. Enough people who have given up on plowing through the red tape to sometimes greatly fustrate you. Lack of job security if you are on soft money. University doesn't invest in training people to be good managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about how your policies and work environment (e.g., parking costs) impact the large percentage of your workforce who make less than $30K/year.
