I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Stevens Point is centrally located within the state of WIsconsin. The benefits package is very generous. The university is a welcoming environment to all.

Dental plan is not the best.

This university has a good vibe and positive leaders, but they offer maybe the lowest rate of compensation in the nation

I worked at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

    Pros

University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point has nice people among the faculty and staff and the students are pretty good, motivated and smart.

    Cons

The parking for faculty is expensive and the bureaucracy is a bit crazy all around. Also the pay is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do right by your adjunct faculty.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Friendly. Supportive. Strong shared governance. Positive reputation. Some attractive/useful physical plant, while some needs work. Very good work-life balance: my supervisor and colleagues were understanding during a time of challenge in my personal life.

    Cons

State support for higher ed is shrinking. State university system often seems more of a resource-sucking impediment than a useful ally. Stagnant/declining compensation is why I wouldn't recommend to a friend. I'm worried that faculty and staff won't support the adaptions necessary for this university to remain sustainable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep improving transparency.

I worked at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

    Pros

UWSP provided great flexibility for student workers and provided jobs that promoted growth and specific skills. The research assistant jobs are hard to obtain, you have to network with the right people and professors, but one obtained provide valuable experience that will help with finding work in your specific field.

    Cons

I personally did not have any experience I would consider a con with UWSP. The only potential cause for issues is the overlap of work at the university and outside work and studies. Sometimes the very school your working for tends to forget you also study there and have less time then sometimes needed to complete some of the work.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great location with strong emphasis on teaching, many first generation college students. As a professor you have the real opportunity to change students' lives. Colleagues are great and will do most anything to help fellow faculty and staff.

    Cons

Upper leadership creates as many or more problems than they solve. State political environment has made it so that there is little chance of ever getting ahead unless one is interested in being mobile to leave the institution that they have worked to create. This is backed up by losing over 1/4 of faculty in last few years. Salary, increasing class sizes, creating an environment of less opportunities are creating a bleak future. There are no options of being able to advance pay more than cost of living if the state legislature allows it for any given year. This is a recipe for never getting paid in real dollars any more than the day of initial employment.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

UWSP is located in Stevens Point in central Wisconsin. The area is beautiful and the people are warm and friendly. UWSP itself is a small campus where it is possible to get to know people very quickly. The students are hardworking too, and you get earnest effort from them. Students also are very appreciative of faculty who work hard for them.

    Cons

Like all of the UW schools, UWSP is undergoing serious budget problems. But because of poor management decisions over the last 20 years salaries at this institution seriously lag behind its sister institutions. This has lead to a number of problems that aren't easy to correct. First, many of the top faculty have left or are leaving to take positions elsewhere. Also, the campus culture is very calcified and it tends not to embrace change and can even be slightly hostile to it. Teaching and service loads are very high. Research is expected, but is not supported or rewarded. Collegiality is very spotty. Some departments get along quite well, but many do not and junior faculty are often abused (to give perspective, this reviewer is tenured). Administration has a problem with "revolving doors" where most come for 3-5 years and then leave for other places. This makes it hard for any long term vision to be implemented which faculty can rally behind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Correct the salary issue and create a long term vision for the campus that everyone can work towards. Too often initiatives are started and then abandoned two years later. Faculty have become jaded under this system and hesitate to lend their time to campus efforts which may not last long. You need to change this to bring the campus back to a productive footing again.
