My experience at Wollongong University was very good. They are a business looking to push forward and I respect that.

Community Programs Organizer (Former Employee) Wollongong (Australia)

ProsManagement are usually strict so no fussing about wondering what to do which is good when you start a new job and want to learn fast. They are by the book, very ethical business. They have specific roles and manage them well, you always know who to find when you have a problem. Great location, minutes from the beach.

ConsSuch a large staff, cannot meet everyone. If you are working with students you may feel overwhelmed by the questions asked of you and best to keep your answers simple to save you time.

    Great place to work at

Technical Officer (Current Employee) Wollongong (Australia)

ProsEveryone is friendly and helpful. We work on a wide range of interesting projects. A number of food outlets located on campus. Convenient location.

ConsSame technologies and skills used for every project limits personal skill growth. Small room for career growth. HR department can be very slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing can really be improved.

ProsUni works not too intensive, but I was only a contractor. People are nice than commercial places I would assume, but wierdos are more in Uni, as long as you are reasonalbe and profession, you are OK. You work more hour, you get more payment.

ConsNot much carrer growth in Uni. You work more hour, you get more payment.

    ProsWork independently, very work-life balance
No office politics, you focus on your work / research and do what you love : teaching
Lots of professional development, seminars and resources
    Work along word-class academic professional

ConsSocial connection as I'm one of youngest faculty member
They pay our marking salary at end of term, 8 weeks after we finish the job
There are element of inefficiency due to lay back work nature and large organization with different KPI for each faculty

Advice to Senior ManagementPay marking salary right after submission
Seamless integration to increase efficiency e.g : IT, HR and Unicentre

    A rapidly growing University

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsQuality management is helping the university grow in size, facilities and quality of service.

ConsLow remuneration compared to capital city universities, but decent for a regional university.

Like most universities there is no defined career path and it can be difficult and slow to get promoted with so many people wishing to work for the University.

Advice to Senior ManagementDefine career paths for university to retain high performing staff.

Good environment, Good place to grow, just a little small and undervalued

PhD Candidate (Current Employee) Wollongong (Australia)

Prosfriendly environment, management is good and there is no stress. The university has some good school and some not so good.

Consteams are small and lacking of resources sometimes. A research job can be a bit of a loner and UoW does not have a international name.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet closer to the researcher and students. There are a lot of benefits in working in teams. However, the community spirit is great.
