I worked at University of the Incarnate Word part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Being a University Tutor provides great flexibility for Graduate Students. It was a good way to get some extra cash without being overloaded. Tutoring also helps with remembering the material and provides a sense of fulfillment by helping others.

    Cons

Having to be on-call. There's a certain pressure to meet with a certain amount of students every week, so management will force you to meet with larger groups of students rather than one-on-one. Also, the amount of hours received fluctuates based on the school year cycle (e.g. no hours the first few weeks of school and then too many during mid-terms and finals).

    Advice to Management

Would like ability to do tutoring in the library study rooms. Sometimes there were no tables and chairs to use in the Tutoring Center, so I would have to tutor in the hallways.

I have been working at University of the Incarnate Word full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Holiday time off,Teaching 3&4year Optometry students how to open and run a practice, once they open a practice. Since I have 40 years of retail optical experience I can help them with the best technics to run a successful business. We have a fully functional Optical with high end frames and Essilor and Hoya lens and a edging lab.I specialize in 3 piece rimless frames. Progressive lens with No Glare and Transition lens.

    Cons

the pay is not up to par

    Advice to Management

Set an example to the upcoming Optometrist, that a experienced Optician can take good care of your patients eyewear needs and make the Doctor lots of money. So pay your Opticians well take care of your staff and they will take very good care of your practice. The Optometrist need the Optician and the Optician needs the Optometrist.

I have been working at University of the Incarnate Word full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

UIW does a great job showing its appreciation of its employees; they shower you with staff-only fun events and discounts. There's always something going on so it's a very fun and young environment. I left because of relocation not because of dissatisfaction. The supervisors I dealt with really allowed for creative innovation and were open to new ideas.

    Cons

The campus is always growing and changing and with that comes progress' downsides such as limited parking and office re-shuffling. The institution doesn't pay in the long run but they do a great job of starting you off with a strong offer, which is competitive compared to many places in and around San Antonio; they do give Christmas bonuses and great holiday vacations so it really adds up and is still better than elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to have better communication among each other but their vision is in the right place. Some staff does need to retire or re-freshen their outlook in order to contemporize UIW's mission.
