    They stole my property

I worked at Update Legal as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

They pay on time and direct deposit is processed quickly.

    Cons

I was let go for being sick for two days and left personal property at the office. After two weeks of my writing and calling them to recover my property and them ignoring me, they finally returned only a small portion of it. Among the things they never returned were an expensive electronic toothbrush and several microwavable containers. They claim these items were discarded but no one in their right mind would throw out such things. I sincerely believe that their staff stole my property and dismissed my concerns when I expressed them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop facilitating the theft of your employees' personal property.

I worked at Update Legal as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

High reimbursement temporary work. Can lead to full time employment. Good way to subsidize income.

    Cons

Quality of experience depends on the specific recruiter with whom you have a relationship in the area office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Excellent office staff in larger markets in New England. Miami office staff a bit too young and it shows in their interactions with older attorneys.

No big problem with vacations as long as a timely request is made.

    Working there was unsatisfactory.

I worked at Update Legal full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I liked the people, they were sweet and friendly. In general really great group of people to work with. Location was also very helpful. Also had a lot of opportunity to move up provided you were motivated and lucky enough.

    Cons

It can be hard to navigate the politics of the place, and to understand why people are sensitive about certain things. Not nearly enough transparency or forthrightness for my taste. Management could be somewhat temperamental at times. People did not tend to stay very long.

I worked at Update Legal as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

It's temporary work, so it's a race to the bottom. When I worked for Update Legal in 2009-2010, the Manager Laura was helpful. She secured me with a long-term contract.

    Cons

Since Laura left in 2012, Update Legal has almost zero presence in the D.C. market. Their projects stunk in 2012. They let other Contract Attorneys acting as Team Leads fire other Contract Attorneys. Not professional. Update has no work anymore in D.C.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get better contracts/projects, raise employee salaries, and do not rely on Contract Attorneys for management decisions.

    Pros

Good people work there- best of the legal staffing agencies I've worked with. Friendly and advocate for attorneys

    Cons

Limited job opportunities and too many people vying for them

Former Employee - Contact Attorney in Boston, MA

I worked at Update Legal as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They are pretty good about follow-up, which is much better than many temp agencies. Everyone that I have worked with there has been very friendly and helpful. They are very accommodating and flexible with people's schedules.

    Cons

Work is temporary and unstable. Like all contract attorney positions, the pay is not great. There is not much room for advancement or permanent work, so once an assignment ends you don't know how long it will be until the next one.
