    I worked at Upromise full-time

    Pros

Smart people, sophisticated marketing, fast pace, fun environment

    Cons

Management has ADD and not patient enough to see things through, too much process for an organization of its size

    Advice to Management

Get back to basics, pick a path, communicate, and execute.

    Pros

The office culture for Upromise has a good vibe, lots of passionate and smart people driving towards a common goal of helping families save for college. Good flexibility and work/life balance for those who are hard workers and can get their work done. Nice office environment with ongoing efforts to show employee appreciation.

    Cons

Management and strong leadership is lacking. Upromise is still trying to find their place within the corporate Sallie Mae entity and has succumbed to a more corporate structure and processes. There are a lot of starts and stops on projects and shifting of priorities, resources and decisions from the management teams which slows down achievements and leaves the "workers" feeling unsatisfied and unaccomplished.

    Pros

you get out at 5 on the dot and you can take long lunch breaks

    Cons

no one cares about the work. the creative director I worked under had horrible taste and was a bad leader

    Advice to Management

hire an inspriring creative manager not a yes man.

    Pros

Good people to work with. Everyone was friendly. The cafeteria was good

    Cons

There were not enough opportunities to raise up through the company ranks. Also the pay was poor to very poor. While the people were all good, hard working people, morale was low due to boring work and low pay.

    Advice to Management

Pay better. Offer and investment management aspect of the business. You should not exist as a business, there is no market for a 529 provider that can not manage funds.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Great co-workers, Relaxed atmosphere (for now), Free coffee

    Cons

Poor Senior Management, Poor communication from Sallie Mae, Poor communication within Sallie Mae, Poor technical direction from Sallie Mae, Lots of departures due to poor management

    Advice to Management

The direction from Sallie Mae is as poor as poor can be, it needs to improve. When I started as Upromise it was a great place. Sallie Mae has negatived that great things about Upromise.

    Pros

casual work environment, incredibly amazing people, strong mission wanting to change the way that families pay for college, feel good work

    Cons

little or no plans for the future, marketing leadership virtually non-existent, absolute lack of support from Sallie Mae, Upromise's parent company.

    Advice to Management

Take a serious look at your marketing team as there's lots of favoritism but not a lot in the way of talent. Marketing used to be the backbone of Upromise but it is no longer.

    Pros

There are some very passionate individuals working for Upromise striving towards the end goal of helping families save and pay for college. They love what they do and have been with the organization for many years. Upromise does tuition reimbursement at 5k a year. Relatively flexible schedule.

    Cons

The acquisition by Sallie Mae changed the culture of the organization. There have been numerous layoffs over the years Mamy star employees have voluntarily moved on from the organization leaving chaos behind. The health care benefits are terrible.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with employees about what's going on. Improve the health care benefits and develop better project process to get things done.

    Pros

Casual dress, good reimbursement for college courses ($5k/yr)

    Cons

Not a clear path for company's future at the moment, not a lot of open communication or planning for career goals.

    Advice to Management

Pull it together soon otherwise more people will be jumping ship!
