Fun place to work, but not worth the below industry standard pay

    Pros

There is a lot of really strong creative talent here, and there is a great client base as well. The culture, if you're into it, is also a major bonus. CEO is great and pretty transparent to the rest of the agency. Some really amazing VP's on the creative side that look out for your overall wellbeing, even outside of work.

    Cons

The company thinks the culture makes up for the extremely low pay, which it doesn't and the company has seen high turnover in the last year because of it. Also, a large chunk of the company has left over the last few (2) years and many positions have not been filled, so it's falling onto the current employees to pick up the slack, without an increase in pay or benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a bit of research into industry standard salaries and realize you won't retain good creatives if they aren't recognized not only for their great work, but for all the additional work they are taking on as of late & pay them for the increased responsibilities.

I have been working at Upshot Inc full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Upshot is a place where you will make life-long friends. Because it's an agency, you will run into many of the same issues, some are better or worse than bigger agencies. What Upshot has going for it is the people, the camaraderie, and the benefits. I don't think you will be embraced as much at any other agency or have as much fun. Half day Fridays in the summer. One day off each month in the winter. Incremental days off when you've worked 3 years, 5 years, etc. Amazing healthcare compared to other workplaces. Great work space that inspires in-person communication. Doors are always open.
You can get very high up here and if you move to another agency, your title will take you far with better pay too.

    Cons

You will learn a lot about the business, mainly the cons, but you will learn how to interact with people who have different backgrounds and interests. Outside of work, employees embrace their creativity and welcome others to join. At work, these artists are constrained by client asks. However, you will find this at any agency.
Upper management needs to stick up when ridiculous deadlines are set.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about who you promote and if they are able to manage a team well. Think about having managerial training. This is something that has seriously lacked at Upshot and does not continue to improve. Just because you suck up to clients or are incredible with Photoshop does not mean you have the managerial skills to own a team.

    Pros

Good benefits, but see below on salary; some smart, positive and talented people led by mostly good management. management tries to be accessible and open. Good spirit, different depts work well together, kinda 'everyone it it together'. Did struggle with digital but getting better now with some good hires.

    Cons

Pretty average work and standards: what the clients want is what gets done. Salary for most people way below average although most people are juniors who leave when they have experience, or stay and stagnate if they're lazy or lack talent. Almost everyone senior has been there years. they say they challenge conventions but everything they do is conventional. With few exceptions, account people hopeless at standing up to clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some back-bone with clients and stop tolerating poor performers (at every level) because you like them. And pay better, even if that means pushing back on the anonymous owner dude.

    Pros

There are a few talented folks, the location is great and it is pretty easy to make friends. The amount of paid time of is also nice

    Cons

The agency's main issues are with its cluelessness in terms of technology, its poor management structure, its extreme favoritism of certain employees (regardless of merit) and its lack of change and adaptability.

Managers often have only 1-2 years more experience than those that report to them. They do not receive any management training and so are often lacking even the most basic management skills. Actually, no one seems to receive any training whatsoever. The culture is also incredibly cliquey and resembles a typical high school.

The agency pays around 20% less than any other agency in Chicago. Hours are long. Appreciation is slim to none.

In terms of the digital space, this agency is 3-5 years behind the rest of the industry. The senior management continues to bring in folks with digital knowledge, but they seem to leave pretty quickly after facing resistance from the lifers that don't "get" digital at all.

Oddly enough, I talked with someone who had worked here 10 years prior. The parallels about company culture, low compensation, cliquey-ness and lack of training were uncanny. This gives me pretty low confidence in this agency's ability to change.

    Pros

It's a very laid back environment, which is great. It's also very social, which is nice (though it may take a little time to find your group. They are open with employees and often promote from within, so it's a good place to start building your career.

    Cons

Low pay is the worst thing about working at Upshot. The benefits and fun stuff is great, but it would be better to just pay us more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider paying more for your talent. I know people are willing to work in Chicago for cheap out of school, but you lose good people and the low pay isn't encouraging.

    Pros

Great benefits and time-off policies. Often promote from within. Fun, laid-back atmosphere (albeit cliquey at times).

    Cons

Senior management talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. It feels like people in charge say "yes" to everything before having a plan which leads to a lot of disorganized chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start executing the improvements you preach and stop dragging your feet.

    Pros

Fun work environment. Good place for entry level employees. Creative/Production teams has good work-life balance with comp. days/time off.

    Cons

Low pay and few growth opportunities. Values the loudest voice in the room and the consistent drinker. Employees can be clicky at times. Account team is extremely under appreciated and not compensated adequately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more confidence in the creative and dont be so reactionary. When a client complains, its important to understand the issue before trying to solve it.

    Pros

Good starting place for younger people out of college, variety of work, and great benefits

    Cons

Pay is low, poor management skills of upper management team. They don't really have the processes in place to recognize and promote talent. Favorites get best project work, managers and above talk the talk but don't really follow through on helping grow a persons career, people on the bench who have skills that can be used elsewhere but nobody takes the time to find out their skillset, people are ridiculed, have bad nicknames for staff members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to learn about your employees, don't put people in management roles because you like them but because they earn it and know about their discipline and practice area.

    Pros

Leadership is calm, cool and collected. They are patient and kind and treat employees with respect.

    Cons

This is a very traditional agency that doesn't seem interested in cultivating a digital clientele. The employees here skew very, very young and the pay is very, very below average, even if you don't fall into that young demographic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more digitally minded people and pursue that market more aggressively. Also upgrade the pay scale, particularly for more experienced hires.
