Former Employee - Sales Associate in Boston, MA

    Pros

the people you end up working with are generally awesome. urban employees tend to get a bad rap for not having the best customer service but it actually tells us in the employee handbook to keep a distance from the customers unless greeting them/ working the shoe room/ fitting room. the employee discount is awesome too.

    Cons

the pay could be a little better. some of the managers tend to be slightly over zealous with standards. sometimes we had to stay until the last t when we closed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    better training for new employees.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Boston, MA

    Pros

The discount is great. Urban does a good job of recruiting interesting, awesome people as sales associates most of the time, and the regular employees are usually easy to get along with.

    Cons

Leadership opportunities and pay raises are based on who sucks up to to management the most, not on experience. Managers who mistreat employees are not reprimanded, and employees get blamed for management mistakes with no way to appeal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat your employees fairly.

  11.

Running clothing from the fitting room, working the register, addressing customer needs in person and on the phone.

Former Employee - Sales Associate  in  Boston, MA
Former Employee - Sales Associate in Boston, MA

    Pros

The other associates and managers you work with will most likely be very awesome people. There is room for growth if you are very dedicated and really work with the company. There are definitely very open lines of communication, and I always felt comfortable discussing problems with my managers. The discount is also amazing!

    Cons

There is not a uniform level of competency among the managers, and at times there is a sense that the older associates know more about what is going on. There is definitely preferential treatment, and it is usually easy to predict the promotions based on friendships. There can be a lot of gossiping because most of the associates are similar in age, and sometimes the management too. In a high volume store, you definitely will not get paid enough to justify the amount of work you do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to find the really good employees you have and compensate them more. If there was more incentive to perform then the company would get more respect from both the associates and the community. From personal experience, it seems that the best employees are skipped over because they aren't "sucking up," which leads to promotions based on friendship vs. qualifications.
