I have been working at Utah Valley University part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Working at the alumni house came along with many perks, including lots of delicious free food leftovers!

    Cons

Having to sit at computer all day long got old after a while, but hey... It's a job!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I can only speak for the management working at the Alumni House on campus. To the staff there, keep up the good work, you guys were great!

I have been working at Utah Valley University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of agreeable people to work with.
The leaders of the English Department provide some informal training on how to teach, in the form of four one-hour seminars each semester.
As long as you are a positive, encouraging teacher, the Eng Dept isn't too critical about how you teach your classes.
If you have trouble with students who cause problems in class, the Eng Dept is very supportive of teachers and helps them work through problems with troublesome students.

    Cons

No offices are provided for adjunct teachers, so meeting with students outside the classroom can be a problem.
Most of my students come to the Intermediate Writing classes I teach with very little mastery of grammar, syntax, or organizational skills, almost as if they have not passed English 1010. It's like having a classroom full of failing students, who don't take good notes and seem not to even think about writing except when they are in the classroom. The students seem interested in only getting a good grade, not in learning to improve their writing skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide tests that students must pass with acceptably good scores before they can sign up for an Intermediate Writing course.
Provide adjunct teachers with at least a carrel in which to meet students.

I worked at Utah Valley University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The other employees, the managing staff members, and the challenge of a completely different workload every shift.

    Cons

The nagging to keep trying to level up to reach different certification levels as a tutor. There is no place to just relax.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Chill it with the requirements for certification. Sometimes it is just nice to be able to take things at your own pace.

    Pros

Get weekends and all federal holidays off.

    Cons

Never getting raises. Its impossible to get raises. I would recommend asking for a higher wage in the interview cause you won't see a raise.

I worked at Utah Valley University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Learned a lot of useful skills relating to my field
Great flexibility, I was able to work another job and they were very flexible to work with that schedule
Very convenient to go to work after taking classes

    Cons

Low wages, but that's to be expected for an entry level educational job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I could have used a little more review and correctional adjustments. I wasn't sure at times how I was doing and where things could improve. Working in a position in my career path, that would have been very beneficial.

I worked at Utah Valley University as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefit package, health insurance, vacation, sick leave, free tuition for employee and family

    Cons

Management had need to assigning blame to others, could make decisions on sound business practice's made too many decision on how someone felt. One complaint could change established policy, without thinking through the ramifications of the change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take into account the business practices taught in the school of business, realize that out of 30000 people on campus someone may have a complaint but does it out weigh all the procedures set in place.

I have been working at Utah Valley University

    Pros

Good work/life balance and the people are usually genuine and friendly.

    Cons

The university is not really that great at training its managers and leaders in how to manage and lead. There is poor accountability and HR is terrible at addressing employees complaints and issues. Also, like most higher education or government jobs, the salary is fairly low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start running the university like a university, not like a small town college.

I worked at Utah Valley University full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Many of the people are very nice to work with. The location is lovely. Many of the faculty are forward-thinking and great to provide services for.

    Cons

Trying to get anything accomplished. Could just have been my department, but staff feel okay about taking off whenever they feel like it, even if it's at the busiest time of year. They feel little obligation to the people they work with to ensure enough coverage for the unit. Pay is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Make decisions and move forward.
