I have been working at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

40 hours of paid volunteer work, good compensation, work life balance, smart people, weekly lunches/breakfast, ping-pong, foosball, running by the Charles river during lunch.

    Cons

The company is still learning how to be Agile, a bumpy road that hopefully will be fixed soon as the company tries to change its waterfall culture.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people. Intelligent, humorous, fun to hang out with. Weekly happy hour. Great salary, great benefits. Employees encouraged to give back to community. Easygoing managers, at least mine was great. No Accrued Vacation - don't know whether to love it or hate it.

    Cons

Influence of EMC is present, and starting to shape the company. VMware appears to be past the line of build/buy - instead of creating products of their own making, they are rich enough to buy whole companies. This stifles internal innovation, just like EMC does.

    Advice to Management

You have talented engineers. Use them. Don't pull the rug out from under them.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work on some really interesting technology. The people are very bright. here is a lot of support for moving around internally from team to team to keep things interesting.

    Cons

Not all departments are as good to work for as others. A lot really depends on your management chain. The HR department is constantly trying to compare itself to Google, benefits-wise. Which is a failure, because our benefits don't measure up to Google's at all.

Smart people, some interesting work, not all of which are well organized, directed, and focussed

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work in some groups is pretty leading edge. Lots of smart people. Flexibility on work hours and working from home. Pleasant physical work environment.

    Cons

Work in some groups is not so leading edge. Lots of hard-to-evolve software lying around. Development and introduction of tools to help developers get their jobs done has stagnated somewhat. Sometimes developers with not such terrific skills make choices that should have been (but weren't) made under the supervision or review of developers with better skills.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Generous salary, good cross section for people with diverse skills, tremendous client install base.

    Cons

No on-boarding, little training, HR is completely absent. Product is a commodity and new offerings are not a robust as advertised. Management appears to scared of EMC, AWS and the market in general. California dreaming has taken it toll, company is not driven to succeed and if you are miss aligned you can find yourself on the outside looking in.

    Advice to Management

Take a deep breath, get your plan together. Don't just say what your going to do... actually do it... e.g. five programs unveiled in Q2... not a single one was a real goal...

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great technology and this company definitely adds credibility to your resume.

    Cons

If you do not work in Palo Alto you are treated as a second class citizen with little chance of promotion.

    Advice to Management

Democratize leadership and allow the best ideas to flow to the top independent of where they originate from.

I have been working at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-always surrounded by incredibly intelligent people -high levels of passion and dedication are present without crazy hours -code quality is valued over rushing out something "good enough" -great mentorship provided to junior engineers

    Cons

-no real connection to people who use your product -even when working on a product that both uses and is used by other VMware products still feel isolated from other teams

    Advice to Management

Give engineers more exposure to customers (even indirectly, e.g. passing along what they like/dislike)

I have been working at VMware as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

the company really pampers you: free housing, free bus pass, lots of socials, and an entire intern program team to ensure your internship is going smoothly. you get a dedicated mentor who is very competent in their field, so you can learn a lot from the job as well.

    Cons

make sure you have your ssn before working. you literally need the receipt before you start or they will defer your start date. this may mean arriving up to ten business days before your start date, which is quite atypical for internships.
