    Pros

Unreal technology, all about the technology and its advancement. Great investment in R&D.

    Cons

Sales people are treated like the necessary evil

    Advice to Management

Keep on investing in R&D and the rest will follow.

  2. Great Technology, but overall a mixed bag to work for...

    Pros

Great access to technology and chance to work with some very smart people. Good Compensation. Company is always so good exposure to ecosystem and like-minded products.

    Cons

Internal processes are not mature at all due to rapid growth. Not enough collaboration yet between internal (business units, development) and client-facing roles (consultants, sales engineers). Employee enablement for growth is very sparse. Middle management not effective. Depending on the group you work for, can be very cliquey.

    Advice to Management

Need to clarify personal / career growth tracks @ VMware. Knowing the "what" is ok, however need to expand on the "how to get there". Especially there are some very mixed messages on PSO side (enablement is supported, however keep utilization high. Register for classes, however more often than not enrollment is dropped at last moment).

    Pros

Reasonable amount of autonomy, Good salary and work environment, Some very smart co-workers (and some not so smart).

    Cons

While I was there there was an immense hiring boom and money was thrown around recklessly. Unfortunately, part of them fixing this problem was laying off 900 people. I didn't get the feeling that the upper management did what it took to get strategy messages to the people doing the work. All the managing that was done was bottom to top.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the lower-level employees who actually do the work.

    Pros

VMware is a firm with Good benefits and they do pay very well for a software company. The technology is still very relevant and very much in demand

    Cons

Challenging environment to work .. You need to be not only competent in your role but also be aware of the political landscape to get ahead..

    Advice to Management

Go back to your roots of people first

  6. Helpful (1)

Great while it was a little smaller (<6000 employees), too many personal agendas ruining culture.

    Pros

Tremendous technological thought leadership, the VMware brand awareness and reputation is very good even with customers complaining about price. The core products are very solid in their capabilities. Many smart and passionate co-workers who really enjoy what they do. Executive management has done a great job of navigating the company into the cloud space.

    Cons

New company acquisition integration plans need to be developed, Sales and Consulting organization having difficulty in migrating to solutions sales with the wider portfolio of products. The corporate culture is in disarray with all the new blood especially as you move away from Palo Alto. The management layer is too heavy in the middle and outside of engineering teams, meritocracy is being replaced by yes men.

    Advice to Management

As the company has grown, there is too much middle management. This layer is often lacking leadership skills which is hurting morale. The recent departures of personnel, while expected with the vesting of the IPO options, has resulted in a good level of brain drain. Many of the wrong people are leaving due to stunted opportunities. Open dialog with the ability to challenge ideas is decreasing.

    Pros

    Cutting Edge Products
    Biggest Market Share - Virtulization/Cloud
25000 Partners w97% of fortune 500 as customers
Internal communication platforms are great for collaboration

    Cons

Fast paced environment with a very entrepreneurial feel, which is good and bad. Travel policy is a lot less lenient than the consulting firm I came from.

    Advice to Management

Haven't been here long enough to tell but it seems like upper management leaves the micro managing to you and they worry about the macro. They are very interested in your professional growth and will let you know when you've done a good job.

  8. Paul Maritz came into a firestorm and has done a good job of stabilizing the organization.

    Pros

VMware is a highly visible company with great technology. The datacenter movement towards dynamimc processing and a mobile workforce puts VMware in place to make tremendous strides in becoming a household name.

    Cons

Management is extremely unprepared and lacking knowledge about the product set. There is a lot of "handing off" where management is incompetent in handling customer requests and the workload falls on the staff. There is also a high level of paranoia within the walls of VMware. They monitor several websites for any employees posting their resumes. They are particularly preoccupied with Microsoft stealing customers with their new virtualization products.

    Advice to Management

Step up and be more hands on with customers.
