    Pros

    VMware is one of the top companies for engineers to work as it provides many career opportunities and helps in work-life balance.

    Cons

    One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. There's always something for everyone to become perfect and to reach at top.

    Pros

    * Great campus
    * Great perks
    * Very flexible work-life balance
    * Guaranteed bonus
    * Parties

    Cons

    * More and more stupid people got hired. It is very disappointing to see quality of engineers declines
    * NO career advance
    * More politics

    Advice to Management

    Focus on hiring the right managers who have proven industry record because only those people know how to hire the right engineers. There are A LOT of stupid people hired recent years, and it is those people who WONT get any other job else where so they stay.... I don't want to see VMware becomes the next HP or Oracle...but it seems it is going down that path

    Pros

    Nice campus (Palo Alto, Bangalore), interesting visitor programs (speakers, musicians), good bonus/stock (for some), generally nice co-workers and most are smart/capable (though not all "good" co-workers). The VMware foundation encourages community giving. It's fantastic.

    Cons

    Recent years, despite financial success/growth, have been challenging at VMW. There are various reasons. To me there are three top level factors in the company's decline from a top place to work: (1) "Stock advocates" putting pressure on EMC to sell of VMW to "unlock" share holder value. (2) Aggressive and (seeming) directionless drive to develop the next growth technology. (3) Infiltration of "Good Old Boy" management.

    The affects of each of factors are subtle and significant by themselves, but very impactful together. (1) Forces cost control and places a premium on a "need to move quickly" to hold off the advocates. This drives poor planing, staffing (no hiring in certain places, forced multi time zone teams), and a shotgun approach to product development, leading to poor execution. This puts tremendous pressure on the employees, making it a less desirable place to work, proven by high sr mgmt and engineering turn over in the last year. Replacement mgmt comes brings outside cultures, which can be good depending on where it comes from, but turned out bad for VMW (good old boys and empire builders that were laid off from "successful companies").

    Advice to Management

    Impose the classic VMware culture that was successful for many years on the management that comes in, not the other way around. Managers come in and change things only for the sake of trying to "look good". Example: Implementation of "Helpnever". VMW was built on a great idea with engineers given the time, resources, and leadership to build it. Get back to this. VMW already spends tons of money on R&D, it's just unfocused and rushed. Ignore wall street analysts that demand endless growth. That is impossible. VMW will take a hit once in a while. Every company does, but be brave (which is not the same as fearless) and do what is right by customers AND employees. The company (stock price) success will follow. Throw out the bad AND "merely" good ideas, choose and take the time to execute great ideas that will transform both the industry and the company like you did before. [ I think VCloud Air is a really bad idea. Don't rely on commodity race to the bottom industries that raise revenues but destroy your profit margin. You might think it's a necessary evil. That used to be the thinking with IBM and PCs but they smartly got out before HP and Dell. ]

    Be great and we'll follow. Continue the current path and look at HP and Cisco to see VMware's future.

    Pros

    Still has many of the early superstar engineers and manages to attract NCG recruits from top universities to keep the talent level relatively good.

    Cons

    There has been a pattern of annual spring attrition taking with it some invaluable engineers, their talent, and parts of the company culture. Not all of the replacement engineers or the company growth in head count is of the same caliber as a few years ago.

    Advice to Management

    Put at least one senior engineer on every interview committee and hold them accountable to keep the hiring bar high and not compromise in the face of competition in high tech to recruit top talent. Make sure new engineers have proper mentorship and are not left on their own to learn what they have inherited or the lay of the land.

    Company has become a little too big.. decisions take too long and there is an influx of people in the management layer, who really are not contributing much.. growth seems to have stalled..

    Pros

    Good work life balance, responsible people, most of my teammates are very good and professional. Work at a steady pace. Good benefits.

    Cons

    Company is getting large and it decreases efficiency. Long promotion process. Slower pace in developing, since it is more a system company that takes long time to release.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more elite people with better salaries and compensation instead of hiring more but not as productive. Reduce complex meetings and work flows.
