I have been working at VMware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great work culture and people. VMware really cares about it's people and wants its people to enjoy work while succeeding in their career. They promote family and work-life balance as well as amazing benefits. There is a lot of training available and a lot of career paths to move towards

    Cons

It is hard to advance in your career unless you network a LOT. That seems to be with most corporate jobs but definitely it isn't always about who is most qualified. You also have to find your own career path, management does not do a good job helping their underlings in career development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is better to take the best of various business models and create a successful business plan vs modeling the company after another local company that hasn't done that well over the past 6 years.

I have been working at VMware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work/Life balance. Great Campus and location

    Cons

Promotions are difficult as higher level VP's being recruited from the outside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training time available to employees. Many classes, just not enough time due to workload.

I have been working at VMware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Unlimited vacation, no set work hours ( team spans time zones), 100% work from home with 2-3 weeks of travel per annum, decent training, salary at or above market, bonuses paid in full usually, 401K and stock options, and full benefits. It beats working at any US bank, healthcare setting, or consulting firm.

    Cons

organizational structure, team collaboration, leadership could use significant improvements

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Carefully consider organizational structure, make sure teams are collaborating, provide top down feedback on what you would like to see each team focused on improving, on ideas you have to make each team more innovative, share your appreciation or feedback on ideas being presented to the company, this will certainly help motivate and drive ambition, and also make for a highly collaborative environment.

I have been working at VMware full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lots of interesting projects and products being developed. Meetings everyday to gather requirements for the next best thing.

    Cons

Internal opportunities and advancement are difficult to obtain for current employees. Poor equity distribution. Advancement for women seems non existent. You have to take ownership of your own work/life balance. It is very much the "all about me" mentality- collaboration is difficult. Business units compete against themselves and it makes everyone work in silos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sponsorship and mentorship is seriously lacking.

I have been working at VMware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Leadership and HR initiatives such as corporate values are great attempts to provide direction and aspirations. Free food and entertainment.

    Cons

VMware falls short in keeping its leaders and especially people managers accountable with MBOs, no consistency or oversight to ensure equity across the company on compensation and promotions. Compensation for people with tenure always lags the market. Very limited career path as you rise up the ladder and its who you know, not what you can do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People programs has to mature quickly and start taking care of your talent with competitive compensation and growth opportunities especially in Silicon Valley. Appreciate diversity and beware of leaders who bring in people who are just like them.
