    Pros

Valassis provides a tremendous work-life balance. The company is very pro-family and works hard to make sure that employees receive the needed amount of personal/family time. There is also a great group of people in the organization. Everyone is very professional and friendly. For a large company, there really is a feeling of family here. The opportunities for each person are tremendous as there is the ability to move between departments to increase skill sets and to advance into new roles and positions.

    Cons

With the recent merger, doubling the size of the company, there are the pains that always occur when combining companies that operated on different systems. Additionally, with so many people that are unfamiliar with all of our products, systems and procedures, there is a learning curve that can get frustrating at times. Additionally, while the stability of the company is a positive, the company can also be slow to enact change. There can also be a bit too much "red tape" at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue to move toward the future. Focus on finding a way to bring more content (especially coupon offers) to RedPlum.com. Content drives traffic and only through many more coupon offers, being refreshed on a regular basis, will we receive the traffic levels that we desire.

    Pros

Good benefits Great work life balance Yearly top 100 places to work in Houston Decent compensation

    Cons

If the company meets goals there is a profit share into your 401k account at the end of the year, but it is lackluster. I would much prefer a 401k contribution match Not easy to promote quickly

    Advice to Management

Lose the profit share and replace with 401k contribution match Don't be afraid to charge clients for above and beyond activity Don't give money away to clients when errors that occur are their faults

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Valassis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A company that rewards its employees, is growing and likes to promote from within. You will find good salaries, happy employees and lots of room for personal development and growth within the company. Many people spend their entire careers here, a rare thing at most companies.

    Cons

Like any publicly traded company, layoffs happen. But this is a company that is solid, and poised for continued growth.

    Advice to Management

Keep taking good care of your employees.

    Cons

    Pros

Nice plant with new technology installed in the pressroom. New plant management has good ideas and are helping to drive much needed change. Although different times all plant associates are treated well and with respect. New management has given me hope for future development since they look at skills and not seniority for advancement

    Cons

Some of the long term people are ungrateful and have poor attitudes towards everything. Despite all the good things happening these people talk bad about supervisors and managers. I have personally heard to managers talking with people on the floor badly about another manager.

    Advice to Management

New managers keep doing what you are doing and let's hope the old boys club of long term people start appreciating what you are doing to establish our success and a future long term

    Pros

    Great People and free coffee

    Cons

They are undergoing some hard times right now and have frozen salaries, but it will get better in 2010

    Advice to Management

Keep growing the direct mail segment and stop making the employees pay for your ineptitude with our salary increases (or lack thereof)

An interesting gem of a company in the Northeast.

    Pros

Great people across the board with a sense of purpose beyond just doing their job. Missing child card program gives the company a real heart. While the business seems simple enough (just mailing store circulars), there is an incredible amount of complexity to the operations of the business that make it quite fascinating. Moreover, there are some very interesting and real advances that ADVO has been doing on the target marketing side. There has been a concerted effort to establish a good work-life balance environment as well.

    Cons

Difficult business environment and fundamental shifts in the marketing landscape make it increasingly hard for an off-line marketing company to compete. Non-obvious location for a marketing services company.

    Advice to Management

Senior management has mostly turned over since my time with the company.

    Pros

Work environment and culture: It was a fun place to work and had a lot of lateral moves to keep it interesting.

    Cons

Lack of structure in career growth, which depended on who your direct report was and if he/she were interested or motivated in helping your growth. Too many lateral move opportunities, not enough upward movement. Further, the work was easy and was no longer challenging after some time.

    Advice to Management

Mid-level management was disappointing in terms of leadership and competence; could be leaner at that level. Too many "generals" not enough soldiers or captains.
