    Pros

A company that rewards its employees, is growing and likes to promote from within. You will find good salaries, happy employees and lots of room for personal development and growth within the company. Many people spend their entire careers here, a rare thing at most companies.

    Cons

Like any publicly traded company, layoffs happen. But this is a company that is solid, and poised for continued growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep taking good care of your employees.

I have been working at Valassis

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Great work life balance
Yearly top 100 places to work in Houston
    Decent compensation

    Cons

If the company meets goals there is a profit share into your 401k account at the end of the year, but it is lackluster. I would much prefer a 401k contribution match
    Not easy to promote quickly

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lose the profit share and replace with 401k contribution match
Don't be afraid to charge clients for above and beyond activity
Don't give money away to clients when errors that occur are their faults

Keep growing the direct mail segment and stop making the employees pay for your ineptitude with our salary increases (or lack thereof)

I have been working at Valassis

    Pros

Valassis provides a tremendous work-life balance. The company is very pro-family and works hard to make sure that employees receive the needed amount of personal/family time. There is also a great group of people in the organization. Everyone is very professional and friendly. For a large company, there really is a feeling of family here. The opportunities for each person are tremendous as there is the ability to move between departments to increase skill sets and to advance into new roles and positions.

    Cons

With the recent merger, doubling the size of the company, there are the pains that always occur when combining companies that operated on different systems. Additionally, with so many people that are unfamiliar with all of our products, systems and procedures, there is a learning curve that can get frustrating at times. Additionally, while the stability of the company is a positive, the company can also be slow to enact change. There can also be a bit too much "red tape" at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to move toward the future. Focus on finding a way to bring more content (especially coupon offers) to RedPlum.com. Content drives traffic and only through many more coupon offers, being refreshed on a regular basis, will we receive the traffic levels that we desire.

I worked at Valassis full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great CEO leadership. Company culture has high standards for work and professionalism. Smart, friendly people and good teamwork all around. I loved the quarterly Town Hall meetings that were broadcast and very effective in keeping associates informed and feeling involved. CEO has set the tone for empowering associates to be part of company growth by encouraging them to be innovators and risk takers. I enjoyed latitude to take many projects in directions that I felt would have the greatest benefit.

    Cons

Corporate Club mentality - Leaders who worked in corporate headquarters were not adept at managing remote work teams and seemed to champion and reward associates for whom they could build relationships with at corporates, instead of promoting equally competent people who were never brought to corporate for team meetings, or to gain the exposure that would bestow upon them the blessing of the corporate management club.
