I have been working at Valassis full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent base pay, overtime is paid full time and a half even with salary. Managers are very flexible with appointments, etc... Knowledgeable friendly coworkers make it easy when tough things come up. Company really cares about having fun and giving back to the community in all sorts of ways.

    Cons

Restructure of the company and a merger is leaving the culture in shambles. People are disgruntled and upset and all the new hires are babies out of college that never had a job. They're unprofessional and inexperienced. I can't count the number of times we've had to hear about how important it is that the company meets this outrageous goal for money earned after expenses with no mention of any incentive for the employees that are making that happen... Where's the motive guys? Where are all those millions going? It's insulting.
They also decided to merge 3 job roles into the current client program coordinator role, not reducing number of clients supported, and no pay raise. Thanks for all the added stress, again with no benefit.
They also merged all of the smaller clients to Houston so there is absolutely no room for growth or hope of doing something more important. You deal 70-100 small clients that you contact 2-12 times a year. If you like client relationships this is not the place for you!

    Pros

The ability to work from home if you live 30 miles away from an office.

    Cons

    Pros

Training, customer service support, and marketing support are all terrific.

    Cons

Complete lack of sales leadership and strategy, compensation has been steadily declining for years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overhaul senior sales leadership team, and create a compensation plan that incentivizes performance.

I have been working at Valassis full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There where many when it was ADVO.

    Cons

No value of associates or what they know, place is run like a factory with NO union. Poorly run company, and since HCHC has purchased it they are just looking at numbers (head count), salaries and just destroying the core business model and the values in the market place. Valassis is now the FedEx and UPS of coupon mailing via the USPS, they will get it there on time but of what value do they offer to the client and consumer? With HCHC knowledge of were to take this company or lack of, they have given the competition an upper hand. Since HCHC has taken the company and moved it from a value oriented operation to just a delivery operation, congrats to the other players in the market you all know have value and in time will have a bunch of NEW customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the past and see what the 2 companies prior were at financially and how strong they were in the market place. Then look at the slow decline when ADVO was purchased by Valassis, and now look at were you have taken this one time leader in the industry. Word on the street is HCHC is re-organizing Valassis to be sold. Also take a look at management staff theres your trigger as to whats the skinny on the street. More fat cats trying to get Rich again.

    Pros

    .
Nice and helpful people. Pay is decent and they are understanding about schedule. 401 k match after merger.

    Cons

Losing many perks after merger. Benefits are very very expensive now. No more flex time as well. Training is ok,but does not prepare you for daily problems which arise. We all have a higher workload now after being optimized which is a new roll we are taking on it adds a lot of work. People are quitting a lot now and most people are actively seeking something else. A lot of talking about people behind their backs to management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management is caring and decent.

I have been working at Valassis full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If you like change and challenge great place to work! You are expose to many different facets of the business and I have learned an enormous amount in the media space. Currently in integration from recent acquisition which I think will be a good move in the long term a chance to explore new business opportunities, products and services as part of a much larger organization. Some of the new benefits 401k match will be a welcome addition.

    Cons

Communication of changes are a bit slow to trickle down to all associates which leads to a pretty active rumor mill, but to be expected in this environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your best employees motivated and engaged. Develop solid retention strategy and communicate the vision. Remember what makes a company great the people!

I have been working at Valassis full-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule, although this only applies to IT.
    Knowledgeable colleagues.
    Work from home days.
    401(k) match (starting next year).
Regular company picnics and other fun activities.
Implementing a lot of newer technology to address deficiencies in infrastructure.

    Cons

Health benefits going up next year by 245%. Seriously!
Infrequent manager interaction. This is good if you have a lot of work to do, but bad if your career is going nowhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the health benefits out-of-pocket costs. Charging an employee $463 per family per pay period is ridiculous.
