    Pros

Fun people to work with. Exciting career changes. Opportunity for growth in a new environment.

    Cons

Beware! Management is biased and will nitpick at everything you do. If you ever get on any one's bad side, you will be tracked and micro-managed so that they can find any reason to fire you.

    Cons

Poor top management. Weak HR. Long term business outlook not positive. Not a place if you want to grow in your career.

I have been working at Valassis

    Pros

Good pay especially for the children they've been hiring lately. Average age 23. No experience required. Typical hours, holidays, casual dress code.

    Cons

Only hiring inexperienced college grads. Pushing tenured employees out. New acquisition has brought on numerous changes most of which have not been positive. Refuse to give promotions or increases but keep hiring new people and paying them more than current employees. High turn over rate. Everything good about working there is gone or going away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Valassis full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People -- there are many employees who truly care about doing a good job and creating successful promotions for clients. Most Valassis employees want to work together, share ideas and implement the most efficient, successful plan for clients. This was not the case with some former ADVO employees.

    Cons

No longer offering flexible work hour schedules (say they do, but most department heads do not hire or promote people who have used them in the past.
Current work environment does not truly encourage employees to question existing processes or programs and present new ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You will get more work out of experienced employees working flexible schedules than hiring brand new people with 9-5 schedules who have to be trained. Internal sales & external clients have to suffer through lesser service for a long period of time each time this is done. Also, give credit & recognize employees who do a good job and provide good service internally & externally versus presenting their work anonymously.

I have been working at Valassis full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a job. The work is easy a robot could do it.

    Cons

Since Hartland Clarke Holding Company took over benefits are decreasing, becoming more expensive and all of the "perks" are going away in 2015.

There use to be multiple positions within the company and now there is only one in Houston. There is no room for growth opportunity and no way to stand out and shine.

Leadership is overwhelmed and makes for no support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with your employees. Don't turn Houston into an automated robot center.

    Pros

Good marketing reach for National Firms.

    Cons

Treating employees badly. Everyone id "job scared".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can not reach your goal if you keep firing the sales representatives with experience and knowledge just because they are having a bad year. Learning curve to sell Shared Mail product is 1 year plus.

    Former Employee - Sales Executive

I worked at Valassis full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

With access to many consumer and promotional trend tools, an associate can become a valuable consultant with assigned client base.

    Cons

Cut backs in support staff, make it very difficult to deliver timely and accurate information to clients.
Compensation plans have been reworked making it very difficult to achieve full potential.
Too much focus on process and not enough on coaching and creative thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your associates and their contributions.
Leadership should spend more time in front of the client and less time reading reports and evaluating the business.
