I have been working at Valdosta State University as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

This is a decent place to get started at, but the city is severely limited and the campus doesn't make the most sense. There is also room for heavy stagnation.

    Cons

    Organizational structure was very poor

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Nothing

I have been working at Valdosta State University part-time

    Pros

I liked how if you were a staff member, you also had the opportunity to continue with your education. I also thought that usually the work place wasn't bad in my department, though there is usually a lot of politicking going on.

    Cons

Policies often seem to change on a twice yearly basis, and often the work will go from way to little, to way to much very quickly depending on the time of year. Advancement is possible, but in many cases unlikely, unless you are willing to redefine your profession often.

I have been working at Valdosta State University

    Pros

Freedom and fun place to work

    Cons

Some departments are just a pain to work with. Some people are solely concerned with how much more day is left until 5pm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a random question about a random service that VSU provides. Call the university and see how long it takes before you get that answer. Now, take that same question and go on campus and try to figure it out in person. Improve the quality and efficiency of the process of helping people get the information they need.

I have been working at Valdosta State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The supervisors/directors in the Housing Office are really personable and really make you feel at home. They understand that school comes first and work around your schedule. They've given me plenty of opportunities to prove myself with my marketing capabilities with the creation and implementation of contests and promotional materials.

    Cons

I disliked having to edit newsletters, brochures, and the student planner. This was boring and I felt I could be doing better things with my time by having a student assistant handle the edits. However, it did allow me to develop a more keen eye for details.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less busy work, more challenging and meaningful work

I have been working at Valdosta State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, Tuition Reimbursement, Benefits, Paid Holidays.
Good place to work while in school or trying to complete masters.

    Cons

Lack of Management, No Direction, Staff are treated as subpar compared to faculty or administrators, Red-Tape All Around.
As many people have mentioned, their managers lack actual management skills because they are put into the position that they are not really qualified for because they have the connection. I mentioned red-tape because it is very political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership, Management Classes, Remove the Red Tape Barrier
