I worked at Valencia College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

great pay and a lot of time off

    Cons

used to be an unbelievable place to work. The people, the hours, the students and the pay. I was so proud to be part of this college. Then...regime change. New campus president and micromanaging Dean. There was a mass exit lately because the stress out ways the pros.

    Advice to Management

Go back to trusting and believing your faculty. We know how to teach especially veterans. Look at student success and state board results instead of micromanaging office hours and sending people to spy on classes and office hours. The need to reconsider their choice in the allied health Dean. Promote from within instead of bringing in people from other states and have no clue about the college or the departments that they run. More faculty would stay.

I worked at Valencia College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Teaching and engaging with students from diverse backgrounds.

    Cons

Little job security, you do the work of a full time professor, and the pay and respect is little to none.

    Advice to Management

    Value adjuncts more.

I have been working at Valencia College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They offer quite a bit of choices in terms of professional development. When a person is full time, it is kind of nice. Considering it is only a junior college, they pay for full time faculty is not too bad.

    Cons

Non-tenured faculty are usually on four or eight month contracts. When they are not full time, they often work as an adjunct. This happens every year, fluctuating between full time and adjunct. A person in this situation does all the professional development advised and still does not get hired into a tenure-track position. Candidly said, Valencia sucks.

    Advice to Management

Have define tracks for employees to obtain tenure track. Do not have a pool of adjuncts in limbo; this only creates more tension.

I worked at Valencia College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Mission, Co-workers, Summer Fridays, Working and Helping Students...

    Cons

Poor management and campus leadership combined with the Human Resource Department being located off-site translates to little no support for employees in difficult situations; Growth opportunities are scarce, and pay is low for one person doing the job of many in these downsized departments.

    Advice to Management

Re-build the employee culture that once was so visible on all of the campuses. Each campus should have an HR Office on-site. Witnessed many supervisors taking advantage of the employees because they could...there is no check and balance.
