Pros – Local employment if want to stay in area. Small company atmosphere. Steady employment. Wide customer base. Opportunity to make many contacts from customer base.

Cons – Unprofessional attitude and actions of both ownership and co-workers. Lack of training in areas of position core competencies. Favoritism shown by ownership while lacking recognition & appreciation of job performance. Micro-management by ownership while ignoring basic business metrics. Lack of procedures and efforts to cease extreme variability in methods for performing basic daily tasks in areas of responsibility. Environment of conflict between employees and with ownership.

Advice to Senior Management – Communicate with one another to avoid conflicting input to employees on same topics. Run the business rather than let the business (and employees) run you. Manage the strategic aspects and allow the employees to implement the tactical aspects with consistent direction. Hold employees accountable for their results and methods. Create and implement standardized procedures for key tasks. Train employees on these standard methods and procedures and then discipline exceptions in a fair, equitable, and consistent manner.
