I worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

401K match after 1 year; farmers market on-site; many employees but still feels small

    Cons

hospitals in states that didn't expand medicaid are under additional financial pressure and the fall out is being felt by all as benefits are being cut to deal with budget shortfalls due to the high cost of treating patients without the insurance or means to pay for services rendered

    Advice to Management

engage in public awareness campaign to make public aware of the fall out of opposing more affordable health insurance for citizens

I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's Vanderbilt! If you can get in before the College Tuition Benefit is completely eliminated, AND you can continue working there until you child graduates college, you're going to save a bunch of money.

    Cons

This is an organization in complete disarray, with a startlingly-widespread lack of leadership in all areas. Morale is at an all-time low, and with all the restructuring, no one knows if they'll still have a job 6 months from now.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to save a dollar and start trying to retain the quality staff that are leaving in droves.

I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic place to learn and experience disease processes you won't see anywhere else. Bonus for being a teaching hospital, you can really grow as a nurse when you have to be sifting through orders put in by the new interns in July!

    Cons

We are chronically short staffed with little effort from management to relieve the added stressors. Raises are very minimal and barely enough to live in Nashville.

I worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, amazing tuition benefits for children, great benefits package

    Cons

Incredible level of bureaucracy / red tape, extremely stagnant career and salary growth, depressing work environment due in large part to senior management.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to grow and motivate employees, and foster their career development. Find ways to not have to have multiple years in a row with no salary increases, followed by a year with a 1% salary increase.

I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Professional work environment, ability to learn new technologies, freedom to approach problems in different directions.

    Cons

Political backstabbing, non-transparent, employees used as pawns, lack of consistent discipline, no pay increase in 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Follow through on promises. Stop lying to employees to get what you want out of them or to get them to shut up. Take their problems to heart. Treat everyone fairly, not just your favorites.

I have been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Prestigious hospital looks good on resume Nursing Magnet status rated #1 hospital in the nation for patient care

    Cons

Upper management doesn't listen to staff even when they go to Unit Boards and ask specifically for staff input certain specialty staff are not held to the CREDO while others are Very difficult to make a lateral transfer within hospital Morale really stinks

    Advice to Management

Actually pay attention to the staff surveys and suggestions the Unit Boards take to you Listen when more than one staff member complain about others and then do something about it

    Pros

Great benefits. Includes fitness facility with classes. They also offer nutritional assistance. I'm learning how to eat healthy and utilize the stairs at work for exercise. The retirement tools are very beneficial as well.

    Cons

No pay raise in years due to the budget crisis. Extremely difficult to get in to a new position.

    Advice to Management

More incentives and career advancements that move you further instead of pigeon hole process that limits your advancement.
