    Not what EXPECTED
Figured I would be working for VI for the full 10 year contract.

Former Employee - Technician II/Qualified Electrician in Myrtle Beach, SC

    Pros

    Paycheck regular.
Liked the work I was doing for VI.
Company seems to have a good reputation for product and systems installed compared to competition.

    Cons

Not proactive. Limited from doing work to make systems operate better by location manager.
Hourly employees holiday pay chopped. Insurance promises on start up drastically changed, would get any promises in writing. Luckily did not drop my existing coverage as I would not have been able to get same coverage back.
Employee handbook vague, leaving decisions up to local managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cutting hourly employees incentives is going to make shareholders happy and management look good in the short term in the service side of business. Long term I believe it will be VanDerLande's downfall.
This business is not like Walmart where you can hire people off of the street and train them to do the job in a couple of days .
Make sure managers are competent to manage employees , and will get a team to work together rather than to pit them against each other.

    Pros

    - Employees are genuine and most are great to work with.
    - Great product, and have a good reputation with most airlines.
-Service Business is well managed and growing, excellent people to work with.

    Cons

    - Upper management in US over projects/sales is terrible and has absolutely no vision for the future.
    - Outsold their capacity within the first quarter of the 2014 fiscal year leaving $500M in projects they can't bid,
    - Management does not properly support Project Managers and they tend to be over worked which adds risk to projects.
    - This is a $1B global company, but in the US acts more like a $100K, as insurance is not that great, absolutely no training. (Be wary if they say there is and walk away).
-This is a company first, family second. They will show you in the interview the internal scoring of the employees, but take that with a grain of salt.
    - People "track" when you come in and when you leave even on salary.
    - President expects you to take first flight out and latest flight in evening.
    - If you work weekends there is no getting that time back, but you get to keep your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Morale is not as high as you think, no inspiration from top management.
    - US operations could be twice the size with proper long term planning.
    - Your competitors use retreads from the industry, with a little training you can grow organically and capitalize on future growth.
    - Current President does not believe in technology and won't give it the necessary attention in order to dominate the market.
    - Practice what you preach on core values.

    Pros

    Paycheck comes every two weeks

    Cons

This company is terrible at executing projects. The believe they have a good process, but they're delusional. Expect 60+ hours a week, huge amounts of stress, and confrontational personalities within the workplace. Don't get carried away by the revenue. Their balance sheet is covered in red - meaning VI has lost millions over the years b/c of their failed process and business practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do yourself a favor and don't commit to anything until your customer approves drawings. You drain your company resources any money because you make false promises to your customers and commit to timelines you can't honor. It's not rocket science why you lose money every year.

    Pros

Horizontal leadership structure - having only 1 or 2 people between me and the head of the company was a pretty awesome experience. Being able to walk into my boss' boss's office when I needed something was really nice. That's not something you can do at very many US companies. Periodic travel to Europe for training was a nice perk too.

    Cons

Horizontal leadership structure - with only one or two levels between you and the execs career advancement is a long game. That said, aside from compensation, they do work hard at keeping employees happy and satisfied in their work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You do a great job at recruiting people who are passionate about their work. But you could do better with compensating them in ways other than job satisfaction.

Current Employee - Administrative Assistant in Marietta, GA

    Pros

Family friendly company. Great benefits including a free gym membership. Flex hours. They give bonuses and raises. Host employee functions several times a year including a steak cook out and an annual Christmas party. You really feel like they care about their employees.

    Cons

There are no women in management. Even if a woman has managerial responsibilities, they will not put the word 'manager' in her job title. The head of Human Resources is a woman and her title is Human Resources Coordinator. She also doubles as the President's Secretary. She has to conduct confidential HR business in her cubicle or find an empty office/conference room. If you are a woman and looking to get on the executive track, this is not the place to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to make your employees feel valued and continue to provide a family friendly atmosphere. Invest more time and effort into the women in this company.
