I have been working at Vanguard full-time

    Pros

    + benefits package is fantastic
    + not a job, it's a career
+ easy to move jobs within the company and learn a lot more
+ great flexibility with working hours

    Cons

    - not many chances for innovation
    - bonus may not reflect actual performance
    - VERY hierarchical

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

= try to flatten the hierarchy to promote more expression of opinion and drive more conversation
= promote innovation and provide opportunities to do so
= reevaluate the process for performance bonus and give more transparency on the subject

Great place right out of college. But North Carolina site has very limited opportunity for growth.

    Pros

Learn a lot in first few months, work life balance is huge, and very good benefits.

    Cons

Limited room for growth in North Carolina, pay is lower than other competitors, and enjoyment is very dependent on who your supervisor is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more opportunity to North Carolina or just have 2 locations.

I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

Vanguard is a great place to work if you are looking for work-life balance. The 401(k) offering is generous with a 4% match and 10% contribution. Start with 2 weeks of PTO with the ability to buy a week and quickly add more over the years. The people are nice and genuinely care.

    Cons

External hires tend to make significantly more than tenured employees who have been promoted into a position. It makes it challenging to remain loyal when this disparity exists. Developing leadership revolves around how good you are at "networking" rather than other skill sets that may be useful to be a leader. Health plan leaves a lot to be desired. When it gets busy, the quality of work of some co-workers seems to decline drastically. Some of the policy and procedures are mind-numbingly archaic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job providing competitive opportunities to your current employees rather than pulling from outside of the company.

I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

The ethical, responsible nature of Vanguard makes it appealing, and my manager was genuinely nice and fairly supportive. Only 37.5 hour workweek.

    Cons

The pay is much too low, the company structure allows for you to try different things buy it's hard to advance, and virtually any job you have there is going to be talking to clients on the phone all day long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better, and allow for more innovation.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People are great, and work life balance is a lot better than it used to be.

    Cons

It's very frustrating to get good reviews year after year, and never get a promotion or even more than a few percentage points in a raise. The promotion policy changes so often that it is hard to hit a moving target.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You used to reward employment longevity, now it seems that you want us all to leave so you can hire cheaper less experience workers. Don't worry so much about being top heavy, instead look at all that gets accomplished by senior technical crew.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Health benefits and bonus (used to be very good but are dwindling). Office complex is very nice; landscaped, free parking. Work-from-home 2 days a week.

    Cons

Apparent ageism/sexism. Hiring only straight from college, or a few good contractors. Young up & comers, sorority sisters are being pushed up the ladder and experienced workers are being pushed out (some dirty tricks). Moving to off-shoring some IT work. Limited career path unless you want to move to PA, or are a white guy at least 6'6" tall. Business-casual dress code physically but virtually a white-shirt-and-tie mentality. Proud of their diverse workforce; keep most of it in AZ and NC, dress them all up in white shirts & ties and pretend there are no differences. Perception is everything regardless of the reality. Management easily snowed by brown-nosers. Company standard is 37.5 hour week; IT was put on mandatory 40 hours BILLABLE time a week; if you weren't averaging at least 45 hours a week you were not "bonusable". Development methodology - and middle-management - changes every couple of years, so everyone just keeps doing the same old thing with different jargon. Some serious gaps in methodology - no proper documentation of products. IT complains of not having the material & equipment to do their jobs effectively.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real. Value your people. Return to the values of Mr. Bogle. Quit drinking the kool-aid.
