    Pros

    Good benefits and Partnership plan.

    Cons

Low Salary, No work from home

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They only hire college recruits. They need to start hiring experienced people or former employees.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People are great, and work life balance is a lot better than it used to be.

    Cons

It's very frustrating to get good reviews year after year, and never get a promotion or even more than a few percentage points in a raise. The promotion policy changes so often that it is hard to hit a moving target.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You used to reward employment longevity, now it seems that you want us all to leave so you can hire cheaper less experience workers. Don't worry so much about being top heavy, instead look at all that gets accomplished by senior technical crew.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Health benefits and bonus (used to be very good but are dwindling). Office complex is very nice; landscaped, free parking. Work-from-home 2 days a week.

    Cons

Apparent ageism/sexism. Hiring only straight from college, or a few good contractors. Young up & comers, sorority sisters are being pushed up the ladder and experienced workers are being pushed out (some dirty tricks). Moving to off-shoring some IT work. Limited career path unless you want to move to PA, or are a white guy at least 6'6" tall. Business-casual dress code physically but virtually a white-shirt-and-tie mentality. Proud of their diverse workforce; keep most of it in AZ and NC, dress them all up in white shirts & ties and pretend there are no differences. Perception is everything regardless of the reality. Management easily snowed by brown-nosers. Company standard is 37.5 hour week; IT was put on mandatory 40 hours BILLABLE time a week; if you weren't averaging at least 45 hours a week you were not "bonusable". Development methodology - and middle-management - changes every couple of years, so everyone just keeps doing the same old thing with different jargon. Some serious gaps in methodology - no proper documentation of products. IT complains of not having the material & equipment to do their jobs effectively.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real. Value your people. Return to the values of Mr. Bogle. Quit drinking the kool-aid.

I worked at Vanguard as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

You are in an elite class. There are a lot of people who have been there over ten years. Vanguard has community involvement. If you think outside of the box and go the extra mile, you can go far.

    Cons

    There is favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the favoritism it is obvious.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are solid. PTO policy is pretty generous. They have a good deal with their Retirement and Savings Program, too. They do a dollar for dollar 401k matching contribution, up to the first 4% of your pay, which is 100% vested. They also do quarterly contributions of 10% of your eligible earnings, which are fully vested after 6 years working there. It's pretty difficult to get fired--you have to screw up pretty badly. And they've never had layoffs in their history, so there's definitely good job security. My experience with management has all been pretty positive. Some of the higher ups (like 3 levels above me) don't listen well to the average peons, but that's pretty typical. My direct supervisors have all been pretty good though.

    Cons

Opportunities are limited, at least at the Charlotte office. They're turning it into a call center. If you work at the Charlotte office, you will either be on the phones, or managing or supporting people on the phones. Across Vanguard, pay isn't competitive at all compared with other companies in the industry. And I've heard that external hires into the same role that I'm in started off with higher pay than me, despite my being more valuable to them by knowing Vanguard's internal systems and procedures.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, benefits, starting pay (while lower than other companies) is still better than other industries. You take inbound calls without having to worry about sales goals or product pushing.

    Cons

External hiring brings in candidates that are paid more but don't do a great job once they are here. If you are not in PA you are limited on job growth opportunities.
