    Safe, but overly conservative.

    Business Development Group (Former Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsVanguard invests in its employees' futures by training them thoroughly and encouraging them to move laterally between positions and departments. It offers great benefits packages and a stable career, since the company focuses on strength in the long run and has yet to lay off employees (in the company's history). Basically, the positions are all stable and mobility is very easy. While each employee has to take the initiative to plan his or her career and make connections across areas, the culture is very safe and welcoming.

ConsThe culture is very conservative. By very, I mean stockings to work every day, hour-long meetings for "feedback" on misspeaking or offending someone. The company thrives because it is cautious and conservative, but that can be difficult for high-potential employees who do not agree with the "put your head down and work" philosophy. Compensation is also significantly lower than competitors.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the benefits, but improve the opportunities for advancement and fast-tracking.

    GOod Job for college students

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGreat environment
    Great training
    Great job security
Good place for a college student
    Great resume builder
    Really good retirement benefits

ConsNot a lot of opportunity to move up in the ranks
Duties of the job become repetitive and boring if you need variety

Advice to Senior ManagementMake more opportunities for promotions and pay increases. Management shouldn't be so hard on they're workers. Entry level position should be at a higher salary

Good start - advancement muddled by incompetent management.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVanguard is secure, easy, stress free, and pays fairly.

ConsOnce you hit a ceiling you can only advance into management which is a maze of beauracracy. Filled with favoritism.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your eyes. Figure out what people want, and your not fooling anyone when you say "this is what you said you wanted", when trying to position a new idea.

    good company to work for

    Investment Representative (Current Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsThis is a great place to work if you are just starting out and want to work your way up.
If you have the initiative and are willing to relocate, you can eventually do well though the salaries are low.

    ConsLow pay.
    somewhat redundant work
no opportunity for performance based bonus or commissions.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees more financial incentives to do well and to stay with the company.

Great place to start a career, but...

    Business Development Associate (Current Employee)
    Scottsdale, AZ

ProsStable company with a good reputation in the industry. Benefits start from day one including 401k.

ConsVery low pay. Not a great place to start a mid-career change. Employees very young and seem to be favored over older employees. Very mundane phone job. I would think this would be a decent job for someone in the twilight of their career that just needs the benefits and (low) pay. Seems like a good place to jump start a career and build a resume.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink about getting rid of some of the overlapping staff. Most of us are just sitting around browsing the web.

    The Cult Strikes Back

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Malvern, PA

ProsGood benefits, otherwise this is not a place to make a career unless you are tip-top management. The best people go elsewhere

Conslousy compensation, a..-kissing helps promotions, no room for creativity, this is not a company for those who want to advance based on skill

Advice to Senior ManagementTake away the Kool-Aid and get out of your offices to talk to the people on the front lines

    Leave if you can.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSteady. You don't need much of your brain to do a good job.

ConsVery political. Some of the middle level managers are basically idiots. They don't treat their direct reports with any respect.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart laying off the incompetents.

    Like working for the government

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsGreat institutional clients
    Great coworkers
Great if you're a minority or have an MBA from a top school, otherwise forget about promotions

    ConsPoor pay
Principals more talented at politics than anything else
Low cost provider = low satisfaction employer
    White collar factory work
Still mandate business attire for people who will never see a client

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Goodship Vanguard is what it is and will never change. If you want a civil servant's job in the private sector, this is a great place to be.

Not a great ship to take a ride on.

    Supervisor (Former Employee)
    Malvern, PA

ProsThe people are great. The benefits are excellent. The working conditions are very good. You will make many friends here.

ConsSenior managment is deluded and turns on a dime. The direction of management changes frequently. It is unfortunate, but this is the type of place where you are evaluated once, and if liked, you move ahead. If not - you are cast aside. Beware.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of Jack Brennan. He has no soul.

    Reputation isn't everything

    Processing Associate (Former Employee)
    Malvern, PA

ProsThe company has a good reputation and working here will look good on your resume. The benefits are good and the campus is a very attractive place.

ConsThe salaries are very low. The culture is conservative and corporate. Ineffective/outdated problem-ridden technology (my department used an outdated DOS system which was constantly having problems), crushing workload, understaffed - each person does the work of 2. Poor training - and training partners/mentors are held to same production standards as non-mentors, therefore not really available for the people they are mentoring. Performance assessments are calculated in an unbalanced/ineffective manner where complex transactions are weighted the same as simple transactions. Overall, the emphasis at Vanguard is on cheapness and this is most evident in the low salaries, the resistance to staffing fully and the resulting backlog and angry customers.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide staff with up-to-date technology so that they can do their job effectively. Hire an adequate number of employees to handle the workload. Give training partners a lower production requirement so that they are available to work with their trainees. Use a fair method of calculating performance where complex transactions are weighted more heavily than simple transactions.
