I have been working at Varec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Management is great and coworkers are very helpful. Managers worked very hard over the past 2 years to get rid of those individuals who never should have been hired in the first place that were causing issues, and bringing the whole team down. Now that they are gone, there is a great team in place, fun environment to work, challenging and friendly competition. Management works hard to reward hard work with favorable schedules and time off. Plenty of room for advancement through the company. The Help Desk is an entry point to the company and Varec tends to hire from within ensuring the potential for a long term career. Worked around the world and this is definitely one of the best places I have been so far. POL family environment!

    Cons

24/7/365 schedule but you are given time off and extra pay for working weekends and holidays.

    Advice to Management

Keep it headed in the right direction! Much respect!

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Varec full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

With the exception of a few, most of the employees are great hard working people. Decent salaries and insurance.

    Cons

One of the worst environments I have ever worked in. Always constant drama, and back stabbing from the few usual suspects...Horrible management at this company. The management can be rude, offensive, unprofessional, disrespectful, and very condescending. Most of the management lack people, and positive communication skills to motivate. Some go out of their way to talk down to employees and let them know when they have done something wrong, but never encourage, or speak positive when things are done well....Very cliquish environment were negative opinions are created and formed against people. Sorry to say this, but subtle racism definitely exist within the environment...It was not very hard to tell what was going on. The company sets most new employees up for failure by not training them adequately to do their jobs.... You’re pretty much on your own when it comes to learning, and knowing your job. If you're not part of a clique with management, or the so called right people, you will most likely not get the adequate training you need, or advance within the company, no matter how hard you work. Until the culture and attitudes change, I would strongly suggest to anyone not to work for the company.

    Advice to Management

My advice to senior/upper management is to make changes to some of the current management. Some of them are corrupting the environment in more ways than you could ever imagine.... Make a more CONSISTENT effort to communicate with the EMPLOYEES and find out what's going on in the environment. Find out what people need that will help them to be successful in doing the job you hired them to do. Make training for every employee a top priority...There's no reason for a company of that size to have some of the major problems that exist. If the culture and attitude is going to change, it has to start at the top.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Varec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - The majority of employees have their own offices - child company of SAIC - When its slow its slow. When you are busy- you are super busy!

    Cons

    - very disrespectful environment - unfair working arrangements - constant micro management - managers speak down to employees and its considered normal and is accepted - very unorganized!

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as humans with respect. If there are issues quit with the passive aggressiveness and handle it professionally. When the entire company functions this way- it makes for a bad working environment. All managers or leadership needs to take diversity training classes since they have not a clue to what can be interpreted as offensive.

    Pros

The only reason to work at varec DoD side is its friendliness towards Veterans. It offers a more than competitive salary for transitioning prior military.

    Cons

Varec's DoD side of things is not very career oriented. There is very little room for advancment beyond Senior analyst. Management and their lack of communication or social skills only serve to enhance an already poor work environment. The favoritism towards those that share certain social interests in such a small work place only serve to magnify underlying issues. There is a sharp lack of professionalism in practice and performance in reference to problem resolutions as well as adressing issues of the employees. The HR department is less than functional in resolving any issues. The company as a whole does a disservice to SAIC of which it is connected.

    Advice to Management

To the Management of Varec. Listen more feverently to the employees. The company is small enough to embrace a more familial environment. With such standards in place instead of employees haveing to deal with the corporate face, they will work till they bleed for you with no problem. Review the 10 minute manager and monitor your investments in your employees. There really are some gems.

    Pros

    Cons

Very chaotic place. It seems like everybody is running around to put out fire.
