    Pros

solid technology from early 50s and 60s. Used to focus on technology, balance of work life, used to collaborate a lot with close by Stanford University. Product is used to save life fighting cancer. Great head quarter location, in Palo Alto. Still have vacation time for regular employees.

    Cons

Current top management team does not have a vision, esp long term vision on how to grow the company or how to develop new technology/ focus on R&D. Instead focus on outsourcing, cut costs, hide away from low sales, finger pointing, promoting incompetence, increase headcount at VP level, borrowing money to buy stock while ignoring if business is heading south. Previous top management teams are PhDs or at least hold a Master degree, but not anymore. People got promoted just because they can talk great or go at finger pointing or they know so and so ( whether belonging to same church or alumnus of Bringham Young University etc). New HR staff & top management is pondering to take away all employee vacation time n instead have no limit on vacation time BUT subject to your manager ( empowering manager so they can work employees like slaves.). Money spend on ERP far exceeded original budget but still system is not efficient , because company outsourced it to India. Original thought was low cost but turn out project was half baked, way over budget n employees are still complaining that ERP system is too manual. Subsequently hired IT staff from India and that is not helping situation, but just one bad decision after another. Payroll moved out to Salt Lake City reason cannot hire good payroll manager in Silicon Valley. Top management did not think about which company in Salt Lake City uses ADP apps called ProBusiness, thus hired someone also without that sort of experience but still charges high salary n makes all kinds of payroll mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Focus on developing new technology n hire top notch scientist to do that, not outsourcing your engineering to India or China or Brazil or Africa etc. Those places do not respect human rights & how do you expect people from there to respect life, develop technology and products that are safe to use. Your HR, IT, purchasing department are departments that are over staffed n not productive. If u want to cut cost take a look at that direction. When your product or software are not working take a look at why it is not working, because the employees not only are low in morale due to bad HR policy, but also due to high outsourcing of work to foreign countries. Your executives and Directors have too many privileges, even at cost cutting period they can still travel in business classes while the rest of employees have to take a full years worth of vacation time plus 10 additional hours to help company to cut costs. If it is so bad why the directors can still travel in business class to one of the conferences. Money spent on video conferencing equipment should be put to good use and all should travel less, and all travel should be in economy class. Clerical level employees should not not travel but they do and cost of travel cannot be justified but no body asked why they travel.

    Pros

Varian Medical Systems is a great company with good compensation. They offer awesome benefits!

    Cons

Not a LEAN oriented company- they have great ideas, but have a hard time putting them into practice throughout the production process.

    Advice to Management

All the non-production employees (management/purchasing/sales) all need to tka e the LEAN certification classes offered by the company.

    Pros

Nice people, nice onsite cafeteria. Onsite gym. Clean, well lit manufacturing floor. Free classes in LEAN Manufacturing and Six Sigma Green Belt training (with manager's approval).

    Cons

Politics and nepotism are ever present here. Also, experience on the manufacturing floor is worthless-they only see a degree or no degree. Although they say they promote from within, don't expect any promotion without a college degree. Also, lots of people having love affairs in the workplace with management knowing and sometimes involved. A little too friendly sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Realize experience is sometimes better than a college degree. Recognize how many affairs there are, and how much nepotism there is in the work place. Also, teach your managers and team leaders how to manage. You could have management training classes and seminars.

    Pros

worked with a great group of people. Loved the work. The time lines to get the work done was stressful, but I enjoyed it. It was satisfying to see it all come together in the end. The benefits were good. Stock options were great. Company car was nice. Salary was lacking, but there was no shortage of overtime. Bonuses were good.

    Cons

It was hard to move up from where I started. The next logical step in my career (which was offered to me) did not make sense financially. Most promotions would have given a small increase in salary but came with a loss of overtime and a loss of the company car. In short I felt stuck in my current role. The travel was a lot, but not horrible. Often gone 3 to 4 days per week. More or less married to the phone answering emails and calls at all hours.

    Advice to Management

    Make career advancement make sense.
