I have been working at Varian Semiconductor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Has a lot of good people working hard to make a difference.

    Cons

Has a good ol' boys atmosphere. Basically if something does not work and your in the good ol' boy network the procedure is wrong, if you are not in the network you did not follow the procedure. Promotions and pay driven whether your manager likes you or not -- not performance. I have been on both sides of the spectrum.

    Advice to Management

Break up the good ol' boy network.

Current Employee - Senior Electrical Engineer
Current Employee - Senior Electrical Engineer
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Leader in Semiconductor Implant. Very large and complicated systems. Multiple disciplines required to implement a system, Physics, Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and Software Engineers.

    Cons

Multiple small locations Multple temorary trailers in use. Low ceilings, Camper style bathrooms, cold walk between buildings in the winter. Overall the office space is "dumpy" People split between multiple buildings, seperated by streets lots of time spent walking around to get things done. VEry tight budgets, only the must critical issues get fixed. Lots of problems linger for a long time. Cyclical industry, quick ramp ups and then ramp downs. Constantly hiring and laying off with semiconductor cycles.

    Advice to Management

Spend some money and fix the lingering product problems, more money is spent in the long run "Managing crises" then getting it right the first time and working bugs out of the products. Is the sale to Applied materials a good Idea, or did the 25 million dollar golden parachute for Gary Dickerson color is opinion
