    Great place to work

Accounts Payable (Former Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsExcellent management, room for growth either with the Health System or the University side

ConsEmployees who've been there for 15,20, or 30+ years unwilling to keep up with technology and/or expectations of management can drag down an entire department.
Low pay, which is hit pretty hard if you also have to drive to work and pay for parking.

Great Benefits and Customer Service Training

Coder I (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsYou can't beat VCUHS's benefits. Leadership is doing great things to develop a patient/employee focused culture. 18 credits per year given after 1 year. Further education is encouraged, and training is always evolving. I have worked there for 8 years in administrative/customer service roles. Advancement is encouraged if you're willing to work and prove yourself.

ConsNot many. I've enjoyed working here.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Wonderful hospital, unfocused and confused financial side

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsYou can do some actual good for patients. Great, unusual cases that you will never run into anywhere else. Extremely complex charts. Doctors who live up to the high standard of care, and care while doing it.

ConsThey respond to outside forces with glacial speed. Unfortunately, that's not the speed at which modern American healthcare works. Far too hierarchical and too many silos.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry researching new plans or programs to see who you need before setting those programs up and throwing money at them.

    High Turnover Rate

Medical Laboratory Technician (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsThe health insurance is inexpensive. The education assistance is a plus.

ConsThe organization as a whole doesn't seem to care about retaining employees. The compensation is way below market value.

Care Partner (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

    ProsLove the flexibility with hours
    Great feedback from management

ConsThe system is so big sometimes you can feel lost and like a number

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate more with the front line staff, they impact the customer service ratings more than anyone else and that is the bottom dollar.

ConsLarge and slow moving with technology decisions
Vision and strategy not made clear to employees

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer better career paths to strong employees who express an interest in moving up in the organization. Implement a better performance based bonus structure for employees.

Decent place to work; dont expect management to play the manager role.

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

    ProsPartially paid tuition
    Medical Insurance
    Proximity to Downtown Richmond amenities
Ability to makes tons of connections

    ConsBad management
    Tricky health plans
    No parking
    Tons of turnover

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease start paying more attention to the facility and it's daily processes. Stop throwing money away on frivolous things that are not cost effective in the end. MCV is historically know for having "too many hands in the pot" syndrome. Leadership really needs to start making real decisions cohesively and stop being so title driven. If you keep trying to get recognition for yourself this organization will never get to the level of its' competitors.

Non-Patient Care: Great place to get experience and move on.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsGreat value to community, collegial environment, excellent benefits, generous HR policies, satisfaction that your work contributes to the greater good of the area.

ConsOutside of patient care, administrative practices are outdated and unnecessarily redundant, employees are not given enough autonomy or authority over responsibilities unless in senior management.

Advice to Senior ManagementOutside of patient care areas: update administrative technology, give employees outside of senior management more autonomy and authority over responsibilities.

    Has been consistently ok.

Operations Specialist (Current Employee) Richmond, VA

ProsI would say the benefits and some of the workers are good people. Pays for school. Location.

ConsRaises are scant, No room for advancement, Tries to squeeze all your knowledge out of you for no pay. Multiple job duties with little or no recognition/pay. Way behind the private sector in pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would say pay workers what they are worth and encourage growth. While encouraging growth be competitive with the salaries. Be consistent in how you treat employees and stop playing favorites and making rules for one set of people.
