My experience is positive - but not for my co-workers

    Legal Assistant (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsPeople are friendly. Compensation good. Opportunity to switch assignments as a secretary if not happy with current attorneys on your assignment.

ConsMany new changes in HR. Always changing things up. Currently a high turnover rate for attorneys.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the new management...I would say to not change so many rules. People won't be happy, and morale will go WAY down.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Typical Law Firm in every sense of the way

    Paralegal (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros-When you work late, they provide dinner. And if you are a baby attorney or skilled staff member, you will be working late.
-Close to transit; easy to get to/from even in the harsh winters.
    -Very structured.
    -Decent benefits.

    Cons-Hierarchy, hierarchy, hierarchy.
-Horrible communication between managers and staff.
    -Lackluster pay.
-Lack of competency or accountability doesn't stop some from advancing to senior/manager positions.
-Very guarded, non-collaborative, secretive culture throughout the large office.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce everyone's billable hours requirement by 5-10 hours a month and use that time to collaborate, solve problems, and LISTEN to your staff about the real issues driving the firm down. Provide a unanimous forum for feedback and then address it objectively, not defensively. Invest in innovation and technology to improve across the board. Don't take yourself so seriously; it doesn't upload your prestige or reputation like you think it does.

    Generally a positive experience

    Non-Attorney (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros- Decent benefits, hours, overall nice people to work with.
    - A somewhat laid-back enviornment for a law firm.

    Cons- Training was spotty
    - General communication could've been better.
    - Some of the senior attorneys play favorites

Negative Experience with Departmental Director and HR Department

Other Department - Non-attorney (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros-Support staff and most co-workers provided positive environement
-Most senior level Shareholders/Practice Group Leaders/Board of Directors were easy to work with/friendly

    Cons-No training
-Poor document retention and technology, unorganized communication between departments
-Bad senior leadership in key departments, including HR - if you have an issue with a manager, you are wise not to go go to HR, as they will not support, listen or investigate accusations
-Negative feedback on a regular basis
-Poor team moral and leadership due to intimidation/interactions with Departmental Director/Human Resources

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the HR Dept. and Shareholders - Sometimes things are not always as they seem. High turnover in Business Development since senior management has changed within the past two years should be an indication. I would suggest contacting the Shareholders that this support staff work with directly with in order to evaluate performance, not necessarily this Director and managers in the department. I'd encourage HR to look deeper into situations regarding their employees and speak with them directly and privately rather than jumping to conclusions. To anyone interviewing for positions in BD, be careful.

    Unprofessional and Incompetent HR Department

    Secretary (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsIf you have the patience and restraint to tolerate the poor management in HR and enjoy being micromanaged, then the decent salary and benefits will be worth your time.

ConsThe HR department is callous and inconsiderate of its support staff. When considering addressing any problem with HR, it would be wise to keep it to oneself because there is no room for empathy at Vedder Price. Addressing any mistreatment experienced is not a wise idea. HR will give preferential treatment to employees that produce billable hours. Passing judgment and poor communication is the norm during employee reviews. Work is judged critically instead of constructively and positive employee performance is overlooked.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers with an educational background in human resource management. Management needs to realize that leading with fear and intimidation are not the qualities of a good manager.

    Factorization

    Legal Secretary (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsPay, Benefits, People, decent hours/flexible hours.

ConsYou had to be what they termed "Vedderized" which meant walking, training breathing and eating in lock step. There was no room for a creative individual mind.

Advice to Senior ManagementSeek individual input from all employees to utilize one's inner talents. It will only make the company better and the employee happier.
