It was an interesting 4 months.

Former Employee - Operations Manager in Detroit, MI
Former Employee - Operations Manager in Detroit, MI

I worked at Velocity Express full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My supervisor (the City Manager, and also no longer with the company) was a true blessing. He had the trust in me, and gave me the opportunity, to succeed.

    Cons

The only true challenge was trying to be honest with the drivers, yet knowing that the "unspoken" policy was ACTUALLY the policy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be true to your drivers, and their unit operations management. They drive the business.

I worked at Velocity Express as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great pay, opportunity and benefits.

    Cons

I enjoyed my career with Velocity Express. I was let go wrongfully. I had no tickets, accidents or incidents. Worked slowed and I awaited another assignment. When called for a new assignment, I was low on funds because I had just assisted my father with a $800.00 Medicare doughnut hole and purchased a GPS to more efficiently run my routes. I was told I could not be assisted by the company due to the one time assistance I received when I first started.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Velocity Express full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Permitted growth from within. Allowed local management to sink or swim to a certain point.

    Cons

Too many levels of management. Constant repeat of explanations to various levels as a result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire experienced Terminal Managers and do away with all the go-betweens up to 4 total V's for the country!

I worked at Velocity Express full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, decent pay, casual environment.

    Cons

The commute, not enough training, not enough employees for the work load. Was laid off after 10 years as the company was sold.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication, better health insurance, need to improve overall employee morale.

I have been working at Velocity Express full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company need to acquire direct deposit so that employees are not strapping in going to check cashing places and banks limiting there time.

    Cons

No real organization. The most unorganized company I ever worked for. No organized training for the employee. Employees are overworked and underpaid and forced to work consistent 12-14 hour shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Send all Management throughout leadership training from an outside source.

Former Employee - Document Exchange in Portland, OR

I worked at Velocity Express full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The CEO and Administrators get huge salaries even though they have never made a profit since 1999. They are a management oriented corporation. New hires are required to waive labor law rights on a legally binding contract. It us a great job for management,

    Cons

Workers are no longer workers. They sign a statement that they are their own business and as such they cannot under Federal Law join a union. Velocity Express is providing them with office support. and it costs 30% of their gross which is below normal market rates. These so-called business owners (drivers) can get individual business licenses and organize into a business owners association. This would give them legal power to regulate safety and negotiate their rates (pay for services) with Velocity Express. They could just tell these business owners that their services are no longer needed. Organization of a business owners association would have to be underground until there were enough members to seriously threaten business operations if they were arbitrarily dismissed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Independent business owners should bid for their services within the range of normal market rates.
