Cons

Advice to Senior Management
Lead !
Pros

Employees are recognized for their outstanding achievement
Verizon has a great work/life balance
Great benefits
Cons
Fastpaced environment with tight deadlines
Advice to Senior Management
Less outsourcing of jobs
Pros
Most managers are understanding on flex hours. The company's benefits are above average. The new management is promising and shows accountability.
Cons
Too much favoritism at work and politics. Very hard to do the right thing. Health care benefits have been cut every year. No more pensions. No more educational benefits.
Pros
Very good benefits and compensation
Cons
Limited career growth within the company
Pros
Good work/life balance at Verizon.
Cons
Can require OT when working in some departments
Advice to Senior Management
Keep open communications
Pros
Great pay relative to other companies. Generally, lots of freedom/flexibility/autonomy for those who do a good job. Very smart people.
Cons
Frequent downsizing, frequent restructuring, limited opportunity for movement across organizations to develop new skill sets.
Organizations do not have mutual respect (Wireless and Wireline).
Industry is changing very fast because of changes in technology-- hard to keep up.
Some higher ups are tolerated because of relationships rather than performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Employee development should be a career long activity-- it does not stop when one achieves management status. Employees should have more growth opportunities.
Pros
Salary is pretty good, and benefits are pretty good. If you show up every day, it is almost impossible to get fired (but you can still get laid off!).
Cons
Very easy to get caught in the RIF machine, where you get let go for no reason other than senior managers wanted to increase their bonuses. Not much training available, and very little chance for meaningful career advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
The best thing management could do is to sell the company to someone who would get rid of the executive deadwood, restructure to eliminate the poor performing businesses (wireline to start), and unlock the potential of the assets.
Pros
Great Corporation with some of the best technology, direction and products
In the country today. Good quality people, training is a priority, education is
always encouraged. Verizon puts such a priority on education, we normally had
1-2 colleges come in with information literally every single week. Benefits are
Second to none. Dept does like to do sales contests and promos from many comps
we market for, do like to give out interesting products and can win a lot of great products.
I won a $350 12MBit Canon camera when it was brand new to the Market.
You can earn VZ Dollars to Purchase products on a special website, I've Purchased a top
Of the line Sony Blue Ray Player from here, Silverware Set, thousand or so dollars of
Gift Cards to major companies and that saves money every month.
Cons
With such a great a corporation, this DEPT is no doubt the worst position
I've ever had. You are not only constantly monitored, you are hourly badgered
by Floor Mgrs on a hourly basis, phone calls listened by your Floor Mgr, Senior
Mgrs, Area Mgrs, Quality Assurance Reps... And get bombarded if someone doesn't
Offer Internet Service to a Senior Citizen moving into a Assisted Living Facility... When the
Economy gets better, there should be more positions in other Depts to move in to
yet with the downturn in economy, a lot of positions were eliminated so moving around
current for past 3-4 yrs has come to a hault. I know this is a Union job position, first Union job
I've ever had and has been a positive actually, yet it seems the horrible treatment of us in
my personal opinion has to do with us being Unionized. I've known a friend who wkd for a third
Party comp selling VZ Services and are treated fairly well.
Advice to Senior Management
I understand this is a Call Center environment yet that's not a reason to treat the people that are
the first line of employees customers speak with in such a disrespectful way. Yet don't judge whole
Corp because of this one Dept.
Pros
Great Benefits
Overtime Pay
Flexible scheduling of time
Telecommuting possible
Cons
Attrition of US employees seems to be the name of the game for upper-level management.
Jobs lost States-side can only be filled by non-US workers.
Definite sense that upper-level management would prefer that all US-based IT employees would "just go away".
Focus on US employees creating the means for offshore employees to do the work and then laying-off the US employees when complete.
Pros
The pay and benefits at Verizon are very competitive and hard to beat. If you are competitively natured, there is much opportunity to afford a great lifestyle.
Cons
Many of the accomplishments that are boasted on by current management are accomplishments made by Verizon Wireless representatives that have little to no integrity. Business ethics are not upheld by assistant and store manages because the representatives " getting the job done" persay are making there immediate managers appear they are leading efficiently. Unfortunately, this results in high turnover and over worked employees. Management is highly beurocratic, and have tendencies to micro manage rather than lead during crunch times.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice to management would be to lead by example, and to use the principles given to sales representatives during their initial training: 80% listening and 20% talking, gain your employees trust, listen for pings and respond accordingly, align and relate with your employees, treat them with respect, give them access to all the tools they need to self manage, and lastly, much like we are supposed to do for our customers, do what is best for them.
