Pros
Telecommuting is allowed
Health and 401K benefits are fair
Good vacation and personal time off policy after completing 5 years at Verizon
Cons
Payhikes are very nominal. Pay is less compared to outside market. Work load is more during releases. Expect you to work nights and weekends
Advice to Senior Management
Management should try to keep the employees happy by addressing their concerns when employees perform well. Management should have their teams try latest technologies.
Pros
Great benefits, flexible with hours for the management tract employees.
Cons
Leadership had no idea what was going on in the company. Still tried to run the company like a phone company instead of the entertainment company that they claimed to be.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop embracing the "Peter Principle" iF someone is promoted to a level they fail, move them toanother postions similar to the one that the excelled in and find someone that knows the job. Enforce all rules evenly across the board and stop paying for technology that you do not use.
Pros
At one time the benefits were great.
At one time promotion was a nice word regarded for hard workers.
Cons
Again Managers not understanding how to manage or
How to inspire team play.
Directors not concerned with promoting long term goals of the business...A lot just want to ride out their last years before retirement!!
Advice to Senior Management
Teach your directors how to manage a business.....Just because you have a degree does not mean you are qualified to lead!!
Pros
At one time the company was great to work for, with a lot of opportunities for advancement and people that cared about the employees. The major positives was that the pay and benefits were good and that management gave a lot of freedom to come and go as you needed to and to get time off if needed. I didn't feel micromanaged at all.
Cons
The longer I worked at the company, up until I was let go, the focus seemed to shift almost completely on profit and pleasing the stock holders, with almost no interest in really caring for it's employees, beyond just being flexible with doctor visits and time off. It seemed a large number of the years worked, ended up with carrots being dangled in front of us all year, with the surprise "no merit increases this year due to the economy" card played at the last second. After a few years of this everyone seemed to catch on to the game that was being played. There seemed to be a lot of favoritism for promotions and special assignments, depending on how well your hobbies and interests matched up with (or how well you pretended they matched up with) your supervisor/manager. With the never-ending layoffs and the companies current focus on outsourcing all it's work overseas, I wouldn't recommend Verizon Business as a very good place to look for work.
Advice to Senior Management
The decisions that hurt the employees all come from up top. Management just has to try and make their employees happy with the very little they have to work with, which is basically attitude, freedom to come and go during the day, and flexible with time off needs. Until the people at the top decide to take an interest in the state-side employees and not just lay them off knowing that in the bad economy we are in they can hire them back at 1/2 to 1/3 what they were making previously as contractors with no benefits...thus creating a win-win for themselves...I really see nothing I can say to the management. They see how little the employees are valued and thus know their positions are not valued much better.
Pros
- Company continues to re-invent itself using cutting-edge tech and look for new revenue streams (cisco telepresence, home automation, smart grid, M2M communication)
- Global team makes it a bit more interesting to work
- Most managers allow flexible hours and remote work arrangements
Cons
- Constant downsizing and left too few to work on too much
- Budget pressure continues to get ridiculous -- no travel, no new PCs, need VP approval to even order printer paper (so Managers never approve anything!!)
- No growth, all the hiring is either offshore (Verizon India has over 6,000 now) or temp foreign contractors at low-low rates (so you get what you pay for!)
- Morale is completely shot, incentives are basically non-existent especially for management employees
Advice to Senior Management
- Offer strong employee discounts on VZ products, very few employees use more than one VZ product (this will create a whole new salesforce that KNOWS the products)
- Start putting more funds into the incentive pool
- Re-introduce ESOP
Pros
good pay
good benefits
good bonus and corporate events
Cons
people are fake
managment does not care about you
work long hours
Advice to Senior Management
listen to your employees
Pros
benefits and paid time off
Cons
beauracracy makes it tough to get anything done
Advice to Senior Management
improve processes and make yourself easier to do business with
Pros
Very flexible timings, as long as you're there for the calls that might take place at extreme times. Open atmosphere.
Cons
Ad hoc functioning, that is claimed to be a requirement for an organization in this industry. Nothing close to a process.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to ensure that the middle management has a process in place for their team's activities just like there's a process just for the critical things.
Pros
I had a great time working for Verizon. Verizon is probably ranked highest in diversity. The work environment was great except number of hours might force to stay longer on few days.
Cons
Number of hours, communication problems as usually faced by large companies
Advice to Senior Management
Facilitate communication amongst different groups.
Pros
The compensation package is probably the best in the industry.
Benefits are great.
The company is well run and it makes tasks and goals easier to accomplish.
Cons
Verizon Wireless is extremely sales driven. The pressure is high to meet and exceed sales goals consistently, but it's not a problem unless you're lazy or lack the skills. If you do struggle here and there, expect to hear about it. Not much praise for accomplishments, but that's where the high pay is reflected.
Advice to Senior Management
Perhaps a bit more respect toward employees is in order. I've witnessed some pretty bad behavior toward employees from managers that usually gets swept under the rug for fear of retaliation. It seems it was part of the culture where I worked.
