I have been working at Verizon full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with. Reasonable pay.

    Cons

This organization will ignore any input from non-managers no matter how obvious or important to the bottom line it may be. Departments are so compartmentalized you cannot solve most problems until you build relationships with staff members of other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give customers a fair deal, be honest when you sell the products, hold sales reps accountable for dishonest sales practices. Stop creating and accepting churn. If you do these things you will create customer loyalty and keep them and they will help you attract new customers that you will also keep and quickly grow the bottom line.

    I worked at Verizon

    Pros

    No consequences for poor performance,

    Cons

While you're there, you will find that accounting is king! Verizon will continue to bill customers monthly for services even if the customer has become dissatisfied enough to cancel all services.

Customers can not stand Verizon service and are leaving in droves.

Also, Verizon as a company will try to kill any chance of you having a career after you leave. Non-compete threatening letters, legal actions, borderline unethical communication with customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get over yourself, there ARE competitors out there that customers will go to. Spend at least half as much time trying to service customers as you do trying to screw employees.

    I worked at Verizon

    Pros

As most corporate entities, it was a stable check with a very structured schedule. Everyone had a place and went from A to B with consistency and usual reliability.

    Cons

No one ever looked at the big picture. The brightest minds in the trenches were completely ignored, even when hundreds of thousands of dollars were on the table: it was corporate policy to protect the norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up communication within the company and realize that the industry is shifting so fast that the mid-management personnel and consultant categories often have a better grasp of the industry today.

I have been working at Verizon

    Pros

Verizon provides a competitive base salary and what can be a lucrative commission component for the sales teams. They also have a very broad reaching and technically advanced network, which provides a sound platform for offering geographically diverse and technically future-proof solutions to a broad range of businesses. Verizon provides a diversity of companies (Verizon Business, Domestic Telecom, Verizon Wireless) which allow for diverse opportunities across diverse companies, with each one providing unique and possibly beneficial cultural and philosophical environments. The company has good tuition aid and matching funds for charitable contributions. You also can get discounts on Verizon products and services.

    Cons

Ever since Verizon acquired MCI and created the Verizon Business business unit, the company has continually and systematically destroyed the company through their poor business practices and unethical sales practices. The MCI senior management team, which took control of VzB, has been totally out of touch regarding the diverse market units which comprise the national base of customers across the Verizon footprint. The company has continually downsized, where literally thousands of years of outstanding and competent employe experience has either been heartlessly let go or, worse, where an opportunity was created for the best people to leave Verizon where many quickly went to key competitors which will hurt the company for years to come.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow local markets to run with more autonomy and eliminate the extensive influences which came from MCI management when they were acquired. The MCI philosophy of business is void of any human connection or ethical character.

I have been working at Verizon

    Pros

Verizon has reasonable job security if you're working for corporate. The benefits are good. I have been lucky to work under some good mid-level managers. The people on my team are nice people and there is very little conflict within our department.

    Cons

Poor work/life balance. Bureacracy. No risk taking. New ideas are not welcome. Time at company is more important than ability. Lot of long termers that don't provide much value. Internal corporate propaganda is mind numbing. Not a place to work if you have any progressive business thoughts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Do something forward thinking.
