I worked at Vermont Technical College part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Small classes sizes, hands on learning and close knit community

    Cons

When e-mails would go out about new ideas some employees would take these new ideas as a personal attack and numerous messages would be generated that seemed belittling and caddy.

I worked at Vermont Technical College full-time

    Pros

Wonderful teamwork on part of staff across multiple campuses. Opportunity to suggest creative solutions, rewarding work with students and chance to learn a lot and gain valuable experience across disciplines because the College is short-staffed. Great benefits and opportunity to pursue additional college coursework for free.

    Cons

Resources are tight. Enrollment is down. The leadership is constantly in flux. And compensation, with the exception of Senior Staff is below industry standard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cutting budgets across the board does not equal reinventing the organization, nor does it result in a repositioning of the organization for growth. It simply demoralizes all staff and limits the ability of everyone to move forward. If you need more students, then admissions and marketing need more resources. Cut departmental budgets where you can and redistribute the resources to admissions and student support service to get and keep students! The College needs to develop a STRATEGIC EFFORT that can be adhered to for more than a few months if things are to turn around.

I worked at Vermont Technical College part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Fun atmosphere, and a good way to make friends. I did like the job in the beginning, it offered a lot of opportunities to plan fun hall events and dorm-wide activities. My residents were very respectful of dorm regulations, and duty nights were very quiet.

    Cons

An unorganized, sometimes frustrating job because my responsibilities were not clear. Planning on other RA's parts and RD's parts was pretty much nonexistent. Planning events or meetings was like pulling teeth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It seems like the Residence Life department needs to listen to students more, and clearly define the Resident Assistant position

I worked at Vermont Technical College

    Pros

You get to work in a real world environment on a small team of students. Everyone is learning and helps each-other along the way. It's basically an intensive class that you get paid to do.

    Cons

You do get paid, but it is low for a software job. It's definitely something that you'll only do for a summer or two.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. The SOSE program was a great kickoff for what I plan on making a successful career.

I have been working at Vermont Technical College

    Pros

VTC is well focused on students and learning and allows instructors the opportuinty to control what and how they teach.

    Cons

The pay is not as high as the Universities in the area, in addition the teaching load is substantially higher than competing institutions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Generally, keep it up. Effort should continue to work towards more teaching excellence with a stronger instructor evaluation and support program.
