I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Vertex retains the frenzied mindset of a start-up while providing the rewards of a mature company. So if you've never worked in a start-up it's going to seem a bit chaotic. Good salary and excellent benefits. Mostly good people throughout with the usual caveats about dealing with science PhD's on a regular basis. Probably no different from other biotech/small pharma in that regard. Surprisingly useful HR people. Well balanced focus between patients and bottom line - only companies that stay in business help patients. Will pay for some training but be prepared to vigorously put forward your case. As the OP said Vertex is not a place for the faint of heart.

    Cons

Very big on the 'corporate values' to the point where its almost cult-like. How well you 'live the values' is actually a dimension on your review. Values are not atypical but if you've worked for > 10 years you may find it annoying.

Some people complain about the work-life unbalance, but it's a function of the business. I've yet to find a development organization that has anything approaching balance. By and large one is dealing with dedicated people If you are in a support group then you need to keep up with that. If you are, as used in the movie Jerry Maguire, a 'paycheck player' then you are liable not to be happy here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. The patients can't wait!

    Pros

Super bright scientists, top notch research, excellent benefits, and an unbeatable vacation policy (4 weeks starting PLUS a week off for the holidays). Most people are pleasant to work with, although with a company the size of Vertex, there are all different types of personality types. The new offices in Boston are gorgeous and the ocean views can't be beat. The surrounding neighborhood is up and coming and can only become better as more businesses move in to the area.

    Cons

The company has had to go through the growing pains of becoming a smaller, "wild west" company to becoming a true corporation. Many management changes and reorganizations have changed the culture a bit and have added a level of uncertainty to the atmosphere.

    Pros

Good benefits, good location, some great people to work with

    Cons

Culture changed significantly; less agile and fun to more corporatey and fearfilled, a lot of good co-workers left or were let go, incredibly top heavy in management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider promotions for worker bees more often, reduce political infighting, try to shift culture back to a place where people looked forward to going to in the morning, remove incompetent managers

Time to Clean out the Middle Managers

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Amazing benefits, vacation time and one off perks! Great coworkers and an opportunity to have an impact on life threatening diseases. Lots of learning and resume building opportunity that you don't necessarily get at other companies (how many other companies in the area have successfully brought drugs to the market in the past 5 years, let alone multiple drugs?).

    Cons

Current culture is very different even from a few years ago. Middle managers (department heads especially) have adopted a "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. Bad behavior is rampant in many forms - screaming and yelling at meetings, temper tantrums in the office and gossiping with direct reports. There also seems to be a lack of opportunity for promotion for those in the lower / entry level positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what your managers are doing and follow up. Don't just assume things are running along smoothly. Its those departments that have a lack of oversight that are running wild and ruining the culture and individual department morale.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are amazing in general. Start with 4wks of vacation plus company shut down between Christmas and New Years. Very intelligent and hard working employees. Disease area is very rewarding. Great experience for people starting out their careers.

    Cons

Sr. Management tends to micro manage and constantly accelerate timelines beyond reason. Work/life balance and mode of operation is not sustainable. You often work nights, weekends, and during vacation. Career growth is limited. Vision seems to be very short term and focused on short term gains. A lot of indecision or changing of decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on balancing work load by truly assessing your resources to the work committed to. Provide a firm strategy on the path forward and have timely decisions to avoid churn and rework. Delegate more and empower teams.

    Pros

Vertex is a innovative company which seeks to find the best way forward.

    Cons

As the company grows, the culture is changing. The leadership seems to be unaware of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to the impact the growth of the company has on the culture.

    Pros

Depth of pipeline in development; commitment to developing only drugs that are life-changing for patients; location; company commitment to remain innovative within the confines of GXP, despite growth or corporate size.

    Cons

We work long, hard hours, but what biophama company doesn't? The company does actively promote that employees maintain a work-life balance. A more formal WFH policy would be great to have most due to such at our competitors.

    Pros

Great internship program, was able to work on a variety of projects and thus learn about the scientific aspects of the field as well as the regulatory and operational aspects. Generous benefits even for inters including enrichment opportunities, and free T passes

    Cons

Difficult to translate internship into full-time job. Internships typically done while in school, but employment in fields in which the internships are offered require 3-5 years of experience for the entry level positions.

    Pros

Great employee benefits and an infectious work atmosphere to foster innovative research culture. A strong-willed leadership team drives this company forward.

    Cons

The company is currently in a state of flux due to pending study results. While this creates a level of uncertainty, the company vision is becoming clearer due to strong leadership at the CEO position.
