    Great vision, horrible execution!

    Analyst (Former Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsIt used to have a great culture. A lot of great restaurants around the new world headquarters that was built in Boston.

ConsA lack of cohesiveness and interaction between groups creates failed opportunities. Beweare middle managers that will stab you in the back in order to advance their careers. Multiple layoffs have all been at the staff level; management has hardly been affected.

Expect to work a lot of extra hours for no recognition.

Not What It Used To Be

    Director (Former Employee)

ProsGreat benefits, competitive salary, focus on therapeutic areas with high unmet needs such as CF

ConsHorrible politics, large shifts in structure, processes and organization seem to occur every 6 months.
Senior management (CEO, CFO level) micro-manage virtually all level of activities, which is extremely counter productive.
Very little work/life balance - Vertex expects to be first, second and third in your life.
Uncertainty in future of company due to limited products and pipeline.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop fighting with each other and start trusting the teams do their job without micro-managing to the point where strategies change every other week

    Was once a good company

    Administration (Former Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsThe benefits were good as was the pay. There was a bonus every year and getting stock is a bonus.

ConsWork life balance is tough, promotions are hard to come by. They seem to lay off a lot

Advice to Senior ManagementStart looking internally and less externally remember your employees are the most important asset to the business so treat them that way.

Network Engineer III (Current Employee) Boston, MA

ProsGrowing environment and not a typical organization

ConsThere is some favoritism and some culture of fear

Advice to Senior ManagementReassess the assets that work there...good and bad. There are some highly dedicated and qualified people that are not recognized and the opposite is true

Hard work some compensation for this.

Director Level (Former Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsGreat employees who care, peers you can count on and daily challenges. Lots of learning if you thrive on that type of culture. Tries to be patient focused which needs more support from senior management.

ConsUnethical management who promote their family and friends. Frequent turnover and poor senior management decisions that benefit few including company. Some departments have unstable leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees and company will mature in a healthy way. Try to look at all aspects of a department and the HR partner as well to assess the department issues both good and bad. No real attempt to understand problems. You need to step back and listen.

    Clinical Trial Associate

Clinical Trials Associate (Current Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsNice vacation and compensation. Great coworkers

ConsWill contradict their words and lay you off on maternity leave. Has untrained managers. Various positions are allowed to make untrue statements, provide zero proof and then not communicate the issues to the accused. Cowardism is condoned and perpetuated. There is a large amount of preference in order to advance. No good growth and development.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake management training, learn email etiquette, learn appropriate and respectful ways to interact with people. Also do not hire individuals just to let them go a few months later because they company does not have the financial resources to keep them.. Do not say that perm employees will be kept over contract then keep the contractors and release the perm employees during a layoff.

Watch your back, firings happen at a whim.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNice benefits, nice people and its a good field to help people.

ConsWeak management, nowhere to get good food for lunch.
