I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great Salary, amazing benefits, business casual dress

    Cons

Layoffs when revenues fall, not many telecommuting opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Spend within your means.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals

    Pros

Amazing benefits- pay next to nothing for health insurance and you get great coverage, great stock plan, good 401k matching, 6 weeks of PTO. Great people in research, beautiful location.

    Cons

Unstable company, layoffs are happening left and right. Promotions and recognition awards are based on favoritism, stress level is very high, people do not feel there is any job stability there, they began outsourcing a lot of administrative programs last year and those have taken a nose dive in reliability and thoroughness (relocation, benefits, etc). I think the CEO is shaping the company for sale so no one should feel stable there for the next few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within. Amazing you had to "slash headcount" and cut 400-plus employees last year, yet you just keep hiring! Stop burning out perfectly good researchers and realize you need a more competitive edge. You aren't going to keep up with mid-big pharma at this rate. Those researchers are why your pockets are full of money.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits, nice workspace and coworkers.

    Cons

People seem to advance based more upon "who" they know, rather than "what" they know. There is a lot of micromanaging which seems to be a waste of time. Too many meetings and not enough execution. No clear levels of communication between departments so the same work is often repeated by various groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline your systems. Stop allowing departments to "tweak" programs for their own needs which later don't correspond to other department needs. Improve and foster open communication between departments. Promote based on work output, not popularity.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The benefits, assuming you can get permission to take a vacation. Vertex had a history of employees staying for a long time, but many of these folks have been laid off. Historically, people were promoted based on their contribution, the work they were actually doing, so job growth was rewarded. But that went away due to belt tightening. Unfortunately, Vertex's Pros are mostly a thing of the past.

    Cons

Horrible senior management that does not live by the Vertex corporate values, favoritism leading to promotions of people lacking the qualifications to do the job well, ongoing layoffs. Employees who are willing to stick it out are treated badly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear out the rot that has crept into Vertex senior management over the past few years, and start over with a goal of returning Vertex to its former status of a truly great place to work. Keep in mind that employees are the most valuable asset a company has, they are a primary requirement both to serve customers needs and to keep shareholders happy. Boston is a small place, and word is getting out to stay away from Vertex.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It used to have a great culture. A lot of great restaurants around the new world headquarters that was built in Boston.

    Cons

A lack of cohesiveness and interaction between groups creates failed opportunities. Beweare middle managers that will stab you in the back in order to advance their careers. Multiple layoffs have all been at the staff level; management has hardly been affected.

Expect to work a lot of extra hours for no recognition.

    Pros

Great benefits, competitive salary, focus on therapeutic areas with high unmet needs such as CF

    Cons

Horrible politics, large shifts in structure, processes and organization seem to occur every 6 months.
Senior management (CEO, CFO level) micro-manage virtually all level of activities, which is extremely counter productive.
Very little work/life balance - Vertex expects to be first, second and third in your life.
Uncertainty in future of company due to limited products and pipeline.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop fighting with each other and start trusting the teams do their job without micro-managing to the point where strategies change every other week
