I have been working at Vesuvius Group

    Pros

Normal working hours as well as holidays and weekends off.

    Cons

No real chance of advancing in the company. Salary was not competitive to other relating jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow advancement in the company as well as competitive salary to current employees.

I have been working at Vesuvius Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits Just got to almost the best I've Seen in the Industry. Also if you have a Passion for working in the Steel Mill, Foundry, Manufacturing and Mining/Minerals Environment then you will Enjoy how the Refractory is Directly made in the Plant.

    Cons

No Organizational Structure, No Training for Union or Salary Personnel, Poor Compensation verses Workload, No Work/Life Balance, Very Old Equipment which they do not Replace or Correctly Repair they just Band-Aid. Duct Tape is Bought by the Pallet. No help from other Employees in the Salary sense, No Team work, every man for himself. When a new Idea is implemented on the Production Floor it is Discussed by Only a Select Number of Salary Personnel, they don't include ideas or Help from Union Employees or the Salary Personnel who Supervise the Operators who actually run the Equipment and Ultimately the New Machinery/Equipment Fails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Very Basic, Listen to Salary and Union Personnel. Get the REsources Needed to keep Employees Safe, Quality High and Production High.

I worked at Vesuvius Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work was exciting and challenging. There was a lot to learn. The job it's self was satifying.

    Cons

No room for advancement. Semi-hostile work environment. Not very understanding of personal disabilities. Not enough diversity especially African Americans. 3 total in 6 years and only one stayed longer than 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more understanding of employees and their mental issues and personal lives. Your life does not stop because you are working, especially people with more than 1 child.

I have been working at Vesuvius Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, great pay, industry leader. Many positions allow for engineers to experience all aspects of product development (R&D/Testing/Qualification, Product Design, Product Manufacturing, and customer trial)

    Cons

Depending on the product line group, there are a variety of expectation (ie excessive hours - 50+ hrs/wk) and are extremely performance/results driven. Spider web of department structure is very confusing. Too many hands in the cookie jar!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire qualified account managers, many dont know what day of the week it is.....

Autonomy, training, encouragement and the freedom to get the job done.

    Cons

Straight salary sales job. Bonus only available to one sales rep per region per year.

I worked at Vesuvius Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

After absorbing FOSECO, Vesuvius retained a few of us. Some former employees who found better Companies to work for gave us good references at their new employer.

    Cons

Many mid level managers who have no real purpose. No ability to differentiate between Quality and apathetic employees. Favors acrimony over direct instruction. Has become a employer of last resort, for many people with few other options or skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People will perform without threats. Every new instruction need not be followed by "or else you will be working at wal-mart". Weed out the non performers, and obstructionist. Hire quality people.

I have been working at Vesuvius Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good sense of community and promotes outreach and awareness. Company has many good training seminars and is eager to send employees to other training.

    Cons

No room for lateral or upward movement. A company that wants to be innovative in a non-innovative industry. Company wants to place safety first and have employers particiapte in Risk Assessments, Safety Audits, Improvement Opportunities, etc but then doesn't give the employers adequate time and resources to follow up with these tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Globally standardize procedures for projects for uniformity and efficiency instead of each site/continent creating their own manuals and technical files with no continuity between them. Begin actively selling new products once they have been detailed, prototyped and shop tested instead of selling concepts to customers and then rushing the engineers to get untested prototypes out into the field.
