Harassment and bullying ongoing at Viasat

Finace (Former Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I worked at ViaSat full-time for more than a year

ProsThey promote a "great work environment", work, life balance.

ConsExtremely unhappy employees seeking to do harm to others they don't like, including verbally announcing "I will get you fired in no time" from one employee at Viasat. Not a "team environment" in finance. Management lacks understanding or desire to understand what his "team" needs, then blames employees that make him "look bad". Not a great place to work. Very mean people and unfair business practices going on internally.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow some interest in your "team", pay attention to what is going on and head the warnings of employees being harassed daily by other employees. Lead your team, don't blame them for making you look bad. Read the metrics you sent around to the employees to grade or rate your management, read them and learn. There is a lot of wasted work done at this company and they underutilize resources daily.

An overall very typical experience.

Software Engineering Intern (Former Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I worked at ViaSat as an intern for less than a year

ProsCarlsbad is a nice place. ViaSat is very personable. We, the interns, had a lunch session with the CEO to ask questions. People were nice and friendly. The company did a lot to make us feel welcome.

ConsThe government being one of ViaSat's biggest customers, it also means ViaSat has to follow many of the government's paranoid rules. As such, there's a lot of red tape and security at ViaSat.

Growing company, decent benefits, not so great work/life balance

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I have been working at ViaSat full-time

Pros- Successful, growing company
- Smart engineers who are generally great to work with
- Nice campus
- Interesting Projects
- Great benefits

Cons- Unfortunately, it's a sweatshop. It seems to be somewhat project-dependent, however many people are overworked.

- Compensation is average to below average

- Lots of process, lots of design by committee.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of spending millions of dollars making the campus look cooler, maybe help your employees improve their lives outside of work by making workloads more realistic?

A good high tech company that's growing quickly and still acts like a small company

Director of Business Development (Current Employee)
Carlsbad, CA

I have been working at ViaSat full-time for less than a year

ProsInnovation is prized, professional staff are smart and laid back. Benefits are great and the SoCal lifestyle and weather are outstanding.

ConsA flat organization with no published organization charts means it can be difficult for new employees to learn who has responsibility for what projects. Base pay seems much lower than comparable Bay Area employers.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to focus on planning for growth, including building space and keeping the good culture while doing some things organizationally required of a larger company.
