I have been working at Victor O Schinnerer Company full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good medical, stock investments, 401K w/ company matching. Three weeks vacation annually. The company's doors are still open.

    Cons

Pay, pay, pay. There is no scale pay for any position. If someone likes you, and they can get you more money, you get more money. If they don't they make it very difficult for you to get promoted or get good pay.
The company has laid off some key people and those left are over worked, under paid and lacking moral. IT support is slow because they are over worked as well with a new system that goes down everyday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your employees the tools they need to work with, that will make them happy. There are maybe four managers that actually work and try to fight for their staff, however, senior management closes the door on them, making it hard for them to get what their staff needs. To senior management, get in touch with your working staff. Recognize that these people are working hard everyday to make that budget and would like a little acknowledgement as well as encouragement. Have a picnic or a company breakfast. Do something! You are loosing respect of those people that would be dedicated to a company, those people will leave and there will be no future leadership.

I have been working at Victor O Schinnerer Company

    Pros

Good company, but a lot of turnover in management. Benefits are good. Promotions have been much slower in recent years. Mid-level managers listen to their people. Telecommuting is allowed and generally hours are good.

    Cons

Focus is on new business, but not always quality of work. Systems are very challenging. They are very bare-bones for support teams and top heavy on management. Its hard to know sometimes what the goals are - different focus from carrier vs. Marsh.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People would be much more efficient with better equipment and better IT resources. Goals are so unrealistic that they are demotivating.

I have been working at Victor O Schinnerer Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, vacation, and organizational structure. Training within the company is top notch and the staff are knowledgeable and true professionals.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive and the work demanded of an account executive will not only tie up your evenings, but your weekends as well. This company is owned by Marsh and corporate has recently swooped in with wild growth expectations and ever increasing margins through expense management. Morale in general appears to be the lowest I've seen it in my six years working here, and yes, that includes the better part of the great recession. Areas for advancement are there, but internal promotions may take several years of amazing standout performances for what amounts to a small promotional step. The firm is growing, but only modestly due to limitations imposed by carrier contacts. Many products are just not competitive and there will continue to be a brain drain of valued, but unappreciated employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Value your employees.

I worked at Victor O Schinnerer Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

good benefits, will help learn to appreciate any other job

    Cons

overworked, borderline slave labor, conflicting instructions from managers, toxic work environment, unhappy employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The middle management at your company should be more thoroughly screened and provided with management training. The managers I had seemed as if they had all taken a course called "how to be the worst managers".

I have been working at Victor O Schinnerer Company full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People are outstanding, you have to work hard, and be patient, but it is worth it; good benefits, plesant work environment, new changes are in store, managers and executives that always have an open door. You will do well if you have good people skills and do more than just underwrite - you have to sell! Insurance is a tough enviroment and Schinnerer does more than most to make it challenging and interesting.

    Cons

Trying to demand the balance between Marsh and our carriers; offering competitive salaries and a competitive product against direct writers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be as direct as you can, tell what you know, and don't be afraid to admit when things are going off course. We have been through a rough couple of years, but positive energy does a world of good for the employees.

I worked at Victor O Schinnerer Company

    Pros

Great staff and management (on the Construction Industry Group side)
Mid-size company (200+ employees), so its small enough to know the company President and speak freely with her about company issues, but big enough to have good benefits.
    Nice work environment
Not a stressful job. You may get behind or overwhelmed ocassionally but for the most part it is not overwhelming at all.

    Cons

Pay not good considering cost of living.
    Unfair promoting practices
About 30%+ of the job is being a 'salesman' to brokers. If you like sales then this may be a pro for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Higher pay improves retention
Career tracks need to be more clearly defined
    Overall great job!

The company has changed dramatically for the worse - dishonesty, incompetence and unethical behavior now reign.

I have been working at Victor O Schinnerer Company

    Pros

The staff are great despite all the obstacles incompetent management place in the way of effectively and efficiently achieving results.

    Cons

Unbelievably toxic environment. Continuing ed opportunities are based on where in the company you work. Management shows a consistent lack of respect to employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out incopetent and unethical managers. Live your mission statement and the values enshrined there. Walk the walk, don't just talk the talk. Treat employees with respect.
