I worked at Vidant Health full-time

    Pros

Coworkers were great and really worked together. The scheduler makes every attempt to help out the staff in the field.

    Cons

There is no support at all from Management despite it being so top heavy. There is no critical thought process to problem- solve or trouble shoot issues pertaining to patient care, except to run more reports and place more expectations on field staff, or hire more management when staffing is already low. There is a ton of micromanagement with No leadership; a complete disconnect between Management and staff and patients. The charting system is ineffective and difficult to navigate, compromising continuity of patient care. Vidant, as a whole, is more focused on appearance than substance. They will renovate offices to make them look beautiful, but not give their clinicians the tools they need to perform effectively and efficiently. The orientation program is short and remiss. There is a high turnover rate because of this- only 2 Case Managers have been there for longer than 3 years- and that, too, contributes to the problems that come along with being understaffed. The caseload is unmanageable, placing both the patient, and your license, at risk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff with the value that you want them to treat their patients with. Without the proper tools and support in the office, they cannot provide the care that produces best outcomes in the field. Focus on helping to improve rather than finding fault.

I worked at Vidant Health (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and various work enviroments. choose carefully and make sure you talk to staff as to their likes of the department you are interviewing for a position.

    Cons

Management manages only from the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to get out and talk to staff on all shifts; don't expect staff to get their certifications, if the ANM do not have theirs. Also quit penalizing folks whom have walked the talk, and management is still talking, only on computer, not in person face-to-face.

I worked at Vidant Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good employer, decent extra benefits. The coworkers were great. Most people work together to get the job done and make sure patients stay safe.

    Cons

Low pay for non-clinical roles. Benefits are disappearing. There are a lot of folks feeling taken advantage of. The message from leadership is be thankful you have a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Why do you think the best folks leave?

    Pros

The healthcare staff will do their best to help everyone

    Cons

The IS department needs a complete overhaul from the top down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sr., Management IS staff needs to retire. Check into your turnover rate of over the last 5 years in IS. and you may find that the ones that could have help to turned things around got frustrated and left.

I have been working at Vidant Health as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Professional Environment. Friendly co-workers. Great pay. Management will work around class hours (if you are an intern). You have the freedom to move around to different teams within the IS department.

    Cons

Minimal training. You learn as you go, for some people this may not be an issue. After you learn the work, it becomes very repetitive (depending on which functional department you are assigned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    None.

UHS was a nice organization to work for, the new-and-not-so-improved Vidant, not so much.

I worked at Vidant Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked for a rural affiliate. Outstanding nursing staff - very tight - know what they're doing - a real "family". It almost made everything else bearable (see cons). The specialists at the "parent" hospital in Greenville were easy to contact and very helpful.

    Cons

New central management is completely disengaged from what it is like to staff their smaller affiliates in the "ruralist of areas" - and how professionally isolated it can be. This particular Vidant affiliate has a history of treating primary care physicians - particularly Pediatricians - very badly. In this era of shortages, they appear to believe that the pool of good doctors who want to work pretty-much on their own in rural areas is bottomless. Meanwhile MD's who book the OR can do no wrong. Hard work and loyalty does not matter at all to the senior management "team", and concern about employee's well-being is lip-service. My call load was abusive/ridiculous, there was no opportunity for advancement, and management was oblivious to the difficulties their MD's faced practicing Pediatric medicine in the middle of nowhere with limited resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to be the Mayo Clinic. Be instead of seem. Listen to the boots-on-the-ground. Reward hard work and loyalty. Learn how to communicate instead of letting your corporate lawyers dictate/bully policy/protocols. Treat the doctors and nurses you already have well/with respect - and pay them what they're worth. Get rid of about three layers of middle-management.
