    Pros

Big brand and an exciting image

    Cons

Commercially mismanaged and unprofitably for a long time, has resulted in a lack of investment in facilities, IT and people. Its also breed a 'desperate' management style where there isn't the time or money to do things properly or look after staff. The senior management are in a destructive cycle and grasping at anything rather than addressing uncooperative, dishonest and unprofessional behaviors. There is a feeling that professionalism is a luxury of profitable companies that they cannot afford, rather than a foundation of them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The recent chaotic restructure was a huge opportunity missed to: establish a strategy (mid premium holidays aligned to the brand, rather then trying to compete in the OTA world), understand what capabilities are needed (Content Management?), and create the structure to breed these capabilities. Instead the new structure is a slight tweak of the old (keep building those competitive silos boys) with obviously anomalies not touched on, let alone creating a competitive business.

    Pros

Part of the Virgin family which gives you access to discounts, free flights, and educational trips.

    Cons

Big, corporate call centre run by try-hard youngsters who have no concept of the real world. Your time and tasks are micro-managed and daily work there is nothing like you would think Virgin would be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit the call centre mentality for sales and think outside of the box to take advantage of the experience and ideas that your employees can bring.

I have been working at Virgin Holidays Limited full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful atmosphere - far and away the best I've worked in.
    Flexible working.
The travel perks are amazing - see the world in premium cabins!
    Looks great on your CV

    Cons

The board level directors are uninspiring and risk averse. Dinosaurs who go with the status quo.
    Decisions are made by committee.
Very hard to get a promotion.
Hierarchical - loads of people have offices who don't need them. Parking is impossible to get unless you're senior.
    Pay is poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recruit from outside of travel.
Get rid of all those GM offices, and create more meeting rooms.
Make some long-term decisions rather than reacting at Trading meetings.

I have been working at Virgin Holidays Limited full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working for a Virgin brand comes with a certain prestige and is certainly exciting being a part of such a huge organisation. The staff are generally all great and take a real pride in their work, wanting to do their best for the company at all times, which is reflected in their performance. Fantastic, industry leading benefits make it easy to see the world and the product you are marketing. You will often find yourself being stretched beyond your job spec, giving regular exposure to new disciplines.

    Cons

The culture within the business is very much geared towards external recruitment for management positions. Many people who have been with the business a long time, had an intimate knowledge of the workings of the company and their role would be constantly overlooked for promotions to management in favour of external candidates, many of who were not as suitable for the role as the people they come in to manage.
Whilst everyone is happy to work long hours and is committed to the cause, this is something that is taken for granted and rarely recognised or rewarded, instead just seen as the norm, even for employees not at management level.
The benefits, whilst fantastic, have really stunted the development of a lot of people who are purely there for the benefits and as such have found themselves terrified of leaving, as having been there a long period of time, have not developed their skill set sufficiently (the non-existent training doesn't help this) and do not want to lose out on cheap flights. This causes a slight undercurrent of resentment in a number of people there who now find themselves unable to find a job elsewhere that will challenge them or give them equivalent benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication is needed with employees, as almost every year one department would have an exodus of staff leaving at once. These would often be people who had been there a long time and had a huge amount of knowledge, leaving gaps and putting departments back a long time. There was never any communication from management to determine why this was happening.
Putting in place better structured training and development plans would also be of benefit and enable them to retain the staff that they should be doing more to keep. A number of people leave there to take on far more senior roles in other companies and flourish, having been overlooked for similar positions within Virgin Holidays.
