I have been working at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I enjoyed to the diversity in the schools where there were unlimited choices in classes in the children. Also I learned about people from different backgrounds and ethic groups.

    Cons

Sometimes I would get an assignment to a school where the transportation is inconvenient for me to attend

I have been working at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent to Advanced schools at all grade levels, with very few under-performing schools.
    Good benefits
Adequate oversight of teachers and tutors
    Strong principals
Both female and male teachers in all schools
Traditional values respected, while relevant modern understandings included

    Cons

Classes still too large in most schools
    Not enough alternative schools
Charter schools not permitted in Virginia

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best way to stretch the finances would be to remove 2 or 3 layers of bureaucracy, above the principal level.
The best way to improve schools overall would be to allow the parents greater say in curriculum and discipline issues.
The best way to improve scores would be to divide academic classes for 6-12 into all boys and all girls, and teach them only in the mornings, when students are alert.
The best way to improve morale for students would be to invest in a full array of co-ed arts classes, offered in the early afternoons, from drama and painting to poetry and dance.
All kids ages 11-18 need to sleep in a bit -- move the hours back to 8:10 arrival, and 8:30 first class. Most adolescents simply cannot function intellectually before 8 am!

Working as a substitute is challenging and exciting. For me it is an adventure each; walking into a new classroom.

I have been working at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Not knowing what to expect each day, and being expected to rise to the challenge of many different situations, and deal with each situation positively is an attractive facet of this work.

    Cons

It does not appear to me that substitutes are appreciated nor compensated adequately relative to the work they perform, considering the many variables they deal with when they enter a classroom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A rating of substitute teachers would be a way to assess the strengths and weaknesses of substitutes, and allow a pay scale that would reflect the overall effectiveness of each substitute, based on how that individual performed.

I worked at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

They spend time training you during teacher work week, they have mandatory training you will participate in during the school year, and they have resources available to you to help create lessons and things for your classroom (Teacher Production Center and IRC).

    Cons

They implement too many new things without fully testing. The gradebook, schoolnet, new report card system, teacher and parent portal. New grading system, teacher evaluation system, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give teachers time to be trained fully with new systems and make sure they work. Teachers need adequate time for planning and collaborating with their grade level.

I worked at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay isn't terrible compared to other districts in the state. Most of the teachers seem to care about their jobs.

    Cons

it's such a large school district (especially in elementary ed) that it is easy to get lost as a person and not feel important or properly utilized. There are a few teachers who you will meet who are definitely only in it for the "teacher perks" - summers off, same hours as their kids, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you hire someone don't let your interaction with them end at completion of orientation. Follow up to make sure their experience is living up to the hype you created.

I have been working at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools

    Pros

We continue to remain cutting edge, but like all governments, still have room for improvement.

    Cons

There are not to many opportunities for advancement and we have not received a raise in four years even though the teachers did. It was demonstrated four years ago that we were between 9-11 percent below the local private sector. The producers for the organization tend to carry the non-producers.
