I have been working at Virginia Department of Transportation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Government agency that seems to be growing.

    Cons

Government agency. Therefore, way too much hierarchy.

    Advice to Management

Respect the private sector experience that employees have when you hire them.

I worked at Virginia Department of Transportation part-time

    Pros

Good balance of office and field work if you like that. Flexible hours.

    Cons

There's high turn over and not much opportunity to grow. Mostly they hire up from the outside. Also being a government agency, there's a strong hierarchy presents so lot's of politics involved.

    Advice to Management

Need to improve turn over rate. Provide higher compensation to keep younger employees around.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Virginia Department of Transportation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The work is rewarding when you think about how many people are affected by our work. For the most part the team members are very friendly and hardworking.

    Cons

The workload can seem overwhelming at times but that is not the norm. The fact that the Commissioner can be replaced every four years (as a new Governor is elected) means that our culture can be affected every four years too. Not always good.

    Advice to Management

Every decision should be driven by this simple rule, "Does this decision make our transportation system better for the citizens."

I have been working at Virginia Department of Transportation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great training and benifits

    Cons

Interviews should only be conducted by human resources and management outside of the headquarters of the listing. Hard work and experience can fall short to favoritism. Also special certifications should change job title.

    Advice to Management

Be attentive to employees that are standing out and not getting the opportunity to advance. This influences them to relocate on a hope that opportunity could be else where.

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

Good pay Nice employees depending on your location Government Holidays off for the most part Locations

    Cons

Part time staff has no rights and you can get let go without recourse even if you did nothing wrong. Good old boy network in play which worked in my favor when I worked with the construction department......but not when I worked at the business office.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to practice there interpersonal skills and treat employees better. Better training Equal treatment of employees whether they are part time or full time
