I worked at Virginia Housing Development Authority full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Benefits are wonderful. Upper management cares about the employees and will work with you whenever they can.

    Cons

Some people can be gossipy and cut throat. It just depends on where you work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're doing a great job. Maybe listen more to lower level associates. They are the ones who really run the company and know how things work. They are in the best position to offer advice and make positive changes.

I worked at Virginia Housing Development Authority full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits, invested Director, nice overall environment. Working in any department OTHER than IT is considered a good gig.

    Cons

The IT Department is horribly mismanaged and uses reorgs and firings to maintain order. The IT Director knows nothing of IT and surrounds herself with people who tell her what she wants to hear. For many years only women were allowed to do well in the IT Department, but I have heard that the situation is slowly changing, although everyone does their best to keep their heads down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accept new blood even if you disagree with them. There's a reason it took you 10 years to redesign a web site, and it isn't because you were right all the time. It's the same reason you were hacked for several weeks several years ago at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars; you refused to listen to the experts.

An overall hostile environment, demoralizing work culture, and sadly incompetent leadership in many departments.

I worked at Virginia Housing Development Authority

    Pros

Great health benefits, on-site parking structure, on-site cafe and gym.

    Cons

Management in key departments is dismissive of the knowledge and talent of their employees. Favortism and a 'good ol' boys' culture, rather than skill or talents, dictate management staffing choices.

Correction to information posted for this company - Janet Butler, aka Janet Wiglesworth, is NOT the CEO, she is merely the Director of Information Technology Services. Susan Dewey is the Executive Director.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value the people working for you; you hired them, you must have had some degree of confidence in their skills.
