I worked at Virginia International University

    Pros

Meeting students from all over the world and helping them get acclimated was always wonderful. Getting to experrience their world views was always refreshing. Employees are friendly and warm. Healthcare coverage began right away. A Monday - Friday position allowed for a good work-life balance.

    Cons

There was little to no training. PTO was very minimal. Upper management were always expecting more than the departments could handle, making a 40 hour work week into a 50-60 hour week. Constant budget shortage to hire additional personal.

    Cons

Incredibly backward management. Illogical spending. Every single staff is overworked. Lack of effective leadership and feasible goal-setting.

I have been working at Virginia International University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I like the idea of providing an education for students who may not actually be able to get a good education in their home countries. I know there are students there who will do great things!

    Cons

Management changes fast and they don't keep you up-to-date with the change. I know that as an adjunct, if you make a mistake or misunderstand a rule they will berate you, but if management makes the mistake you are expected to forgive them and forget about it. That hurts motivation. Also, some students don't care. I suspect they are only here for US consumer goods. I see that attitude at a large scale here, more than anywhere else I work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We're a business but we are also a place for academia and to seek the truth, and that you can;t always force or red stam.
