I worked at Virginia Tech part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Get freedom to pick on lots of interesting projects related to your major. Different locations and laboratories dedicated to researching different topics. Can do hands-on work or other research work if preferred.

    Cons

Very few challenges associated with working part-time as a researcher at Virginia Tech. There is an hourly limit per week for some jobs worked, and this can be a hassle in weeks where there is a time crunch to meet a deadline.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much advice to share to management. Management professors/researchers are usually well involved in the process.

I have been working at Virginia Tech full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Cost of living in Blacksburg, VA is so low, that I have no problem living with a low income. If I ever have a problem HR is always there to help. Benefits are great! If you are in need of experience, great place to get it. They offer free classes and training courses. I have never had a problem taking time off and we receive plenty of holiday hours. Our college loves to have potlucks, work environment is always fun/energetic and everyone at the school is very kind.

    Cons

Located in a very small town, without the school there would be nothing here. Don't expect to get away from students. Just to give you an idea, the next town over is properly named "Christiansburg" (so you may love it or hate it, sadly there is absolutely no in between), this town is what you make of it, not much here. No room for growth, getting a job in the school is tough, trying to move anywhere in the college is almost impossible. Do not get involve with school politics. You will have to pay over $120 for parking a year and will never find a parking spot (they are even building on existing parking areas so parking will be reduced in the coming years). So far my college has pushed two people into retirement, would not recommend this job for your career.

    Pros

Great opportunity to work with top faculty as a full time MS level research associate. The pay was great for southwest VA.

    Cons

Some bureaucracy as with all large institutions.
Blacksburg is small and tough for a young professional.

I have been working at Virginia Tech full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

1 The campus is beautiful and clean
    2 The benefits are excellent
3 VT has some good faculty
    4 Very flexible work hours

    Cons

1 Not a city campus so life is boring for single professionals
2 Located in a small town with the nearest city ~3 hours away
3 So called 'Parking Services' is actually a high profit business
4 VT is not able to retain top notch faculty

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1 Administrative hierarchies need reforms.
2 Traditionally VT has reacted to the changes instead of preparing for them and this needs to change!
