    Pros

Benefits, salary, location - can't be beat. 8% retirement fund matching, state health insurance, lots of vacation, generous salary - all in a relaxed environment with low cost of living. Everyone is very engaged and enjoys the work - no ladder climbers or people who just want a paycheck.

    Cons

None to speak of. Um... Parking permits on campus are expensive?

    Advice to Management

    More free coffee and donuts.

    Pros

Very flexible and inviting professors. In the group I'm in, CESCA, everybody has been wonderful and it's part of the reason I decided to stay after my undergraduate degree

    Cons

    I'm only a student still, because I'm a GRA

    Pros

Great faculty in the animal science department. They work well with your schedule and they really want you to succeed. They are very interested in your research goals and teaching you what you want to know.

    Cons

Pay is poor. If you're conducting research as an undergrad it is unpaid.

    Advice to Management

    Consider passing your undergrads.

I have been working at Virginia Tech (More than a year)

    Pros

Generous annual leave for staff hired as faculty. Very positive and supportive colleagues.

    Cons

Departments are very siloed, and there could be more collaboration across offices and departments. Working at a regional campus could be challenging, as we felt disconnected to the main campus.

    Pros

Team environment was always fun, everyone striving to accomplish goals set forth. Great opportunities to get involved with the school and have flexibility with hours as a student

    Cons

Not much room for increased pay as a part-time worker and full time student

    Pros

Virginia Tech is an amazing school located in this amazing college town. Every thing is really cheap and CoED friendly. Lots of opportunities for students to grow professionally.

    Cons

4 hours out from Northern Virginia and 5 hours from my home in Maryland. But If you have car you can make the drive home or use the really awesome VT carpool facebook page.

    Advice to Management

Not applicable in this case. Great team of staff in the Electrical engineering building.

    Pros

Virginia Tech is a great place to work as a graduate student, the campus is beautiful and Blacksburg is relatively affordable; my rent comes to about 30% of my net income, and food, groceries, etc. to about another 40%. Of course the quality of the job when working as a GRA/GTA is highly dependent on who you are working with.

    Cons

The main issue I have is the student fees that are not covered by the assistantship. While on paper I make a pretty comfortable amount for a graduate student, in the neighborhood of $18,000 - $20,000 a year, student fees take about a $3,000 chunk out of that amount each year. There worryingly little transparency about these fees, especially considering that they continue to steadily increase.

    Advice to Management

Have a transparent way of discussing the student fee structure with the graduate student body. I am just supporting myself, and splitting expenses with my live in girlfriend, and it takes a lot of discipline to have any money left over at the end of the month. I can't imagine how students with children are making ends meet.

    Pros

It is great to work for the University as a student because they are aware of student hours and give flexible working times. They are very accommodating and want to help you grow as well.

    Cons

As the House Supervisor your expected to be on call almost 24/7. I've heard working in the dining halls can be very fast-paced and a little stressful. It is harder to get time off.
