Food Service Assistant at Turner Place

    Food Service Assistant (Former Employee)
    Blacksburg, VA

ProsHigher starting wage, money given for free lunch, good managers, training and advancement opportunities, stable schedule and weekends off (usually)

ConsNo benefits unless salaried, hard to get full time hours, must only eat food provided by the establishment, heavy customer traffic, repetitive tasks, upper management will always prioritize students (employees and customers) over wage and salary workers.

ProsExcellent professors. Good mix of experienced and new professors.
Great place to do graduate research especially in structural engineering. The structural engineering laboratory is very well equipped.
    Helpful administrative staff.

ConsThe graduate student intake is increasing on a yearly basis. Hence, more competitions for the GRA and GTA positions.

I'm very happy with my experience as an MS student in FREC.

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Blacksburg, VA

ProsGraduate student salaries are competitive and in line with the cost of living in the area. Leadership in my department is extremely supportive of graduate students. The university overall is supportive of graduate education as well.

ConsFunding for research and travel can be a challenge, although this is likely the result of the national attitude toward research funding, not a product of the university itself.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome more environmentally friendly on campus, forget about the money that comes from the mining engineers and look at the bigger picture. Set an example for the rest of the state even though we aren't in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

ConsIndividual professor may or may not be as good as you hope.
Make proper inquiry to see if the professor is good or bad before joining anyone.

    Great Environment

    Web Applications Programmer (Current Employee)
    Blacksburg, VA

ProsGreat benefits, pleasant environment (mostly), continuing education. If you are interested in continuing your education then VT is a great place to work as they will waive your tuition as long as the coursework benefits the current role you are working in.

ConsFor IT folks it can be difficult to get raises. VT has lost a lot of talent simply because they pay their engineering personnel much less than what they can typically get in the private sector. Of course, health benefits and pleasant work environment often help compensate for this. You have to know what you're getting. If environment, stability, health insurance, etc. are important then VT is probably good for you. If you are looking to maximize your salary then I'd go elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo retain the best IT talent work on career progression and bringing salaries up to par with private sector

    Graduate Student Teaching Assistant

    Graduate Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
    Blacksburg, VA

ProsAs a graduate student assistant, I take labs for undergraduate classes. It is a fresh revision of those basics as every now and again, students come up with new and interesting questions/problems. To be able to take on this challenge, you really need to have a sound understanding of the course yourself. This is a nice way to keep in touch with your basics.

ConsSometimes the work load adds extra burden, especially as a graduate student.
