I worked at Virginia Tech part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The coworkers are friendly and helpful and always willing to explain something to you when you don't understand.

    Cons

Getting in touch with some professors is difficult because of their class schedules and office hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Finding a way to allow professors to teach classes more in line with tier research would allow more of a chance for interaction with the inner workings of each department.

    GTA In Engineering Ed.

I have been working at Virginia Tech

    Pros

Probably one of the better GTA jobs on campus, in terms of pay. If you like teaching, you certainly will get to do that. Some of the courses give you a lot of leeway in terms of how you present material, which is another GTA rarity. At its best, this assistantship can be really rewarding. At its worst...

    Cons

Too much teaching load, some poor course organization, course reputations mean you may have lost the battle before you meet students. The course materials seem all over the place sometimes, and different people seem to have different ideas about why the courses exist and what should be taught.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They are updating the courses, so it may get much better soon.

    Pros

Beautiful surrounding area: low cost of living, low crime, little traffic. Great dining options on campus.

    Cons

Parochial attitudes and cronyism thrive; diversity is limited; local employee pool is overrun with country bumpkins.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow 360 performance reviews to weed out incompetence.

    Pros

Great college town, tons of wilderness activities available. Competent research environment.

    Cons

Pay is below expectation, no obvious pay rising for almost 6 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more attention to the students rather than hiring professors for research oriented positions.

I worked at Virginia Tech part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules. Great people(made some of my best college friends here). Free on campus meals when working.

Deet's Place was (IMO) by far the best place to work in the Dining Services Department at Virginia Tech as a student. The customers are generally friendly, the employees are awesome, and you get some free meals and coffee out of the deal as well.

    Cons

Good not great salary, management getting stricter when I graduated.

Some management turnover was when I graduated which made the work life a little stricter than in previous years. Though this was probably necessary for business purposes, the day to day work life was not as loose as in the past.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't change too much. Deet's Place was (and I hope continues to be) a great place for students to work.
