    Pros

flexible schedule, pleasant environment, good relationships with other employees and managers

    Cons

VERY low pay. the company definitely takes advantage of college students and recent graduates. poor/no benefits, stingy with hours, and little room for advancement. the company isn't doing all that well with competition from online retailers like Amazon, and this has led to employees suffering with fewer hours and no raises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

pay more and give benefits! especially to employees with a college degree.

    Pros

Good insurance and benefits. Lot of paid time off can be earned. Most of the worker bees in the company are great to work with.

    Cons

Director micromanages all the departments and Division managers have no say in there department. Staff is forced to work areas not related to there jobs and pulled away from there jobs they were hired to do. Then are asked why they cant get there assignments completed. Under staffed in some departments and over staffed in some departments there are more managers then staff. Director and division managers always in meetings and are not in touch with the customers of the stores. And communication and training is a big issue. And some of the upper managers don't handle staff in a correct matter. There is complete fear of the Director if you don't agree with him your going get belittled or even fired. You work in fear all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training needs to be done. Upper management including Director needs training on how to talk with staff. Director needs to be more open-minded and be out on the floor with the customers to hear what staff hears from the customers. Needs to be less managers in some departments and more staff in others.

    Pros

    Very flexible with scheduling.
Understanding of personal emergencies-they didn't ask for proof when my mother died and I needed leave time.
    Changing work environment.

    Cons

Hard to get complaints and concerns resolved.
    Upper Management can be condescending.
There is a lot of gossiping and rumors spread.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to employee concerns more.
Follow up with complaints and conduct issues.

    Pros

VTS has very friendly employees. Fantastic benefits. Great place to make contacts. The work can be very rewarding, since the company does a lot of good for the University.

    Cons

Sadly, the work environment is toxic. When things go poorly, upper management becomes very hostile to employees. Valuable employees, including management, are often driven away. There's little communication between levels and upper management does not seem to like feedback. Departments on campus do not want to work with VTS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you raise your voice to employees, punish them for presenting opinions, and ask them to work unpaid overtime, you set a negative tone for the entire workplace. It is why few are comfortable giving honest reports, and why employees feel they must protect themselves against the business.

    Pros

Benefits are very good. Part-time workers are treated very well compared to some companies.
People are able to advance if they prove they can do the job.

    Cons

Do not like how some people were treated in meetings. Were sort of humiliated.
The textbook industry is questionable and makes it difficult for the company to give raises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat all employees fairly. Had 7 or so evaluations in 23 years, so it was hard to get feedback of your performance.

A company where you can work five jobs and get underplayed for one of them.

    Pros

People are friendly, and customer base is pleasant. Great benefits, including healthcare and retirement, but only for full-time workers.

    Cons

This company severely underpays employees. Many are asked to work unpayed overtime, which is actively encouraged by management. When a manager or supervisor leaves, the company attempts to save the money by not hiring replacements, instead passing those duties to others with no additional pay. We had hourly wage clerks making schedules for the department for a while. Communication is also a big issue. New hires can get confused because there is little training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and pay people honestly.

  9.

    Pros

Proud to support the University that I attended.
Town of Blacksburg is fun to live in with all the college students

    Cons

Management makes you feel inadequate, Upper management micro-manages, Demanded to do more work than physically possible and then not given overtime to get it finished

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring youth into the company and let the people you hire do their jobs
