A company that competes by a psuedo-prison philosophy.

    Pros

I love the work itself, and I get along great with my coworkers.

    Cons

Most salaried employees make 15-30% less than their market value dictates. VTC manages to retain good employees by using dirty tricks in US immigration law by getting highly skilled employees under the L1 visa. Under this particular visa, VTC will sponsor immigrants to come to the US to work here. However, if that employee wants to quit, he loses his sponsorship and is deported - hence employees quit very rarely, even if they hate the company they work for. Because the employees have no cards to bargain with (they certainly can't just find work at a better company) VTC doesn't have to pay competitive wages to keep good employees around. It is interesting that a good immigration reform policy by the government could literally devastate this company.

For myself, I make $12,000 less than an entry level professional would in the same industry (and I'm NOT entry level). I plan to make every effort to remove myself from the company when I am capable of doing so.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a big disconnect between the top of the company and the people who make things happen everyday. This is in part because the company is essentially a sole proprietorship, with one man on top who quite often makes bad decisions.

Never work here if you have any other option

    Pros

None really, the young engineers are fresh from school and hard working, still everyone greets by "sir" as if we are stuck in British empire days - you got it no positive to state.

    Cons

The title summarizes it all. The owner rules here. HR is of no use. You have to put up face time without any reason. Family doesn't come in the picture. So why even work here? All the negative things written in the different postings are true. So if you are planning on relocating to Roanoke to take a job at VTC please don't commit that mistake. It's a dead end as someone put it to me. Micromanagement, no authority to make any decision, rude owner - asks you to meet at 7 pm - does it sound crazy? Believe it - all these are real. You will see in your offer letter that it will be mentioned that you have to put in long hours and occasionally over weekend. You will travel on your own time, stay in motels and not hotels!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of face time, the firm makes enough money, give a break to the employees, m a ke it a 8 - 5 job, don't misuse visa rules and tie up employees to your firm, sell the firm to decent owner

    High Turnover - Toxic Environment

    Pros

The employees are awesome. The people for the most part are wonderful, friendly, will help if they don't think they will get in trouble.

    Cons

High High turnover rate. The turnover rate ranges from 2.5-5 % every month. When the employees call every other Friday - Black Friday you can guarantee that it is bad. When the HR department has gone thru 7 assistants since 2011 - There is a major problem. The longest of those assistants was a year. Hiring is done based on ethnic background, if you get elderly or have done something against the grain, you have written your pink slip within months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people fairly and equitably. Quit discriminating.

    Pros

Small company, hence many different opportunities and projects to work
Company does grow no matter whats the economy.

    Cons

    A Lot!
Micromanagement, lack of trust, cheap culture within organization, no flexible time for work (Salaried person), vacation time used for shutdown,
importance is given for amount of hours you work not for the quality of work, such a dumb and cheap way to assess one's performance, literally you will be praised more you stay after 5 pm.
Employees are taken for granted, no respect for their personal life.
fire randomly, yes I mentioned job security in Pros, but it depends case by case
    Too much work per person,
    No parking spaces, seriously

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to respect employees and their valuable quality of work, not who works longer or stays longer. Employees do have personal life, respect that. There are smart people working, pay them good and trust them, really TRUST.

RED FLAG - Be wary of recent glowing reviews

Former Employee - Engineer  in  Roanoke, VA
Former Employee - Engineer in Roanoke, VA

    Pros

It's a job. The training was pretty good. Most of the regular employees (non-managers) are good to work with. Job security is very good. It's very hard to get fired, engineers get moved to sales in lean times, and management will put the whole plant on a week-long furlough when it's really bad (it's a pay cut, but can be better than a random layoff).

    Cons

Check out the reviews. From 2010 to August, 2012, there were only 6 reviews, all negative to mediocre . As one would expect for a medium-size company, there was one every few months.. Fast-forward to the week of August 15-19, 2012: 8 *glowing* reviews. I think Virginia Transformer management discovered glassdoor, and are trying to game the system.

Micromanagement, lack of trust, collaboration actively discouraged, pay and benefits are not very good, no concept of flexible time for salaried employees. No work/life balance (must use vacation time for annual plant shutdowns. Once vacation was gone, plant-wide furloughs cut at my pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't game the system. It's dishonest. Instead, take a look internally and treat your employees better. You've got some really smart people working there, trust that your employees can get the job done. Recognize good effort without stealing credit, and employees will be more willing to go above and beyond in the future. Don't treat your employees like cattle, and they'll work harder instead of stewing in resentment (and they'll also write honest reviews on their own)

Upward mobility does not depend only on education. Demonstrated skills are given due consideration for promotions.

Continuing education is supported and encouraged.

    Cons

Many younger employees with lesser experience are present.
The facility shoudl be expanded. We don't have enough room.
