    THEY LIE....

    Ambassador (Former Employee)
    Norfolk, VA

ProsThey pay you and the work study works around your school schedule.

ConsThey teach their employees to lie about the poorness of the college.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop telling your ambassadors to lie to get more students. Also, stop making the good food only when the prospective students come. The regular students are the ones paying you they matter too.

Friendly place to work; embarrassingly low compensation

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Norfolk, VA

Pros- Great work/life balance within department
    - Generous healthcare / dental benefits with VERY low monthly premiums
    - Friendly coworkers
    - Personal leave accrues quickly

Cons- Mean salary for IT nowhere close to industry standards
    - Low salary overall for administrative & support staff
    - Lack of diversity (particularly minority women)
    - Departments tend to be understaffed - difficult to take time off
    - Zero opportunity for promotion unless people quit

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in the staff. Increase salaries, or more employees will leave for better paying opportunities. The college president shouldn't be making millions of dollars per year while the hardworking housekeepers are struggling to get by making minimum wage.

The cons of working at this institution heavily outweigh the pros.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Norfolk, VA

    ProsSense of community,
    Nice retirement and leave benefits
Small student body allows for much interaction
Much potential to be a great place

    ConsLack of comprehensive administrative plan
Poor faculty support in recruitment and retention
    Employees disappear overnight
Iocals either know nothing about college or have very respect
Neighborhoods surrounding campus have highest crime rates in city

Advice to Senior ManagementPick a specific set of realistic goals and stick to them. The culture of the campus should not vary from day to day depending n administrators mood.

big problems, little prospect for positive change in near future.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Norfolk, VA

ProsStrong sense of community among faculty, although much of that comes from shared hardship.

ConsNo long term planning for the future, especially in Admissions and Finance. Finance and Student Affairs seem to be actively obstructing improvements on the Academic side. Dozens of fiefdoms jealously protected by incompetent, under-qualified, overpaid, risk-averse bureaucrats, and some of the faculty are just as bad. The campus facilities are embarrassing. We're now paying the price for building everything on the cheap decades ago. President of the college is asleep at the wheel, focused on unrealistic goals while blowing smoke the rest of the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementPresident, most of VPs need to step aside to make way for new ideas and much-needed change. Need to hire outside of the college and to look beyond the near-term to think about the college's survival in the long-term.

    Could be better

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsMany opportunities to work with students and colleagues outside of the classroom. Dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to students. Good benefits and work-life balance.

ConsDead weight has been allowed to linger for too many years, with related problems overlooked for no discernible reason. Some senior administrators are out of touch with or blatantly ignorant of issues outside their range of interests or special projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake notice of what's happening throughout the campus and evaluate how well departments contribute to growth and innovation. There is much to recommend about working at VWC, but indifferent leadership will continue to drive away those who actually care about their work and the institution.
